newsday.com
NEW YORK -- Thousands of commuters were evacuated from Pennsylvania Station and train service was halted Monday afternoon when a fire erupted in a transformer beneath the East River, authorities said.

Amtrak, the Long Island Rail Road and New Jersey Transit were affected, and all trains to and from Penn Station were halted for about three hours.

Please visit the link provided for the complete story.

The fire department reportedly stated that the explosion probably caused what they believed was a separate incident of smoke at 33rd Street and Seventh Avenue.

The cause of the tranformer explosion is not known at this time and is under investigation. 5 people were taken to the hospital due to smoke inhalation from the fires. Passengers were told to make other arrangements to get to their destination and rush hour traffic was predicted to be messy.
