I agree with you a 100%. That sense of familiarity definitely helps sell a song but can be done in such a way that you capture the vibe without using any other artists material. When you make a tune and use samples they must be cleared sometimes by three parties...Artist, Label and Publisher. Depending on how prevalent the sample is or how popular the tune/Artist the sample came form, a percentage of the new project will be worked out. This can be so high a lot of tunes never get a release or alternatively one of the above three parties refuses clearance.

Like you say rap music uses instrumental loops that can be from other tunes. Club Music uses sampled acapellas, breaks and noises. Fat Boy Slim and The Avalanches are good successful samplers.

Damn they're all coming out now...i think an eighties film fest is in order.
Two movies you mentioned i loved and forgot of their existance, The Lost Boys and Weird Science. Ooh Kelly Le Brock when i was 13.

That reminds me of Women in Red and my favourite comedy duo of that time.....Richard Prior and Gene Wilder.

There's some awesome work in there for sure. I never actually watched Platoon or Full Metal Jacket in the 80s, which was strange, because Tour Of Duty was one of my favourite TV shows back then.
Lost Boys. Always a classic, pity they had to ruin it by making two modern day sequels...

I remember being totally freaked out by Robocop, the sheer amount of gore and violence was something I'd never really seen before then. And of course, Planes, Trains and Automobiles. Never loses it's touch.
This is what I mean about these kinds of movies, even now, if I haven't seen them for years, can still impress even 20+ years later.

Crocodile Dundee was always a point of contention for me, being an Aussie. The film made us look like a bunch of yobbos. No wonder the rest of the world thinks we ride kangaroos to work...

Most Highlander fans have universally agreed that Highlander 2 was simply a bad dream of Conner's brought on by eating some bad haggis.

For me, re-watching Dark Crystal was my disappointment moment. I remembered it fondly, but really, it's pretty boring...I tried to get one of my friend's kids into watching it, and they just couldn't stick it out.

On the flip side though, I picked up a lot of Robotech episodes, and wow, that show really holds up. I was home sick one day, and went through DVD after DVD of the Macross saga, and I was just as into it as I was as a kid. I still felt the same thrill at the theme music, and the battles. Awesome stuff. Wish that live action movie would get made already....

And of course, let's not forget See No Evil, Hear No Evil...

Back in the day...those lips...that bod...and the accent....wow.
