Some strong statements from China's Liberation Army Daily newspaper. I understand that the media would reflect the views of the Chinese government? What do ATSers think of this, if anything? Genuine warnings? Saber rattling?

Reuters

China's top military newspaper warned the United States on Saturday that U.S.-Philippine military exercises have fanned risks of armed confrontation over the disputed South China Sea.

The commentary in China's Liberation Army Daily falls short of a formal government statement, but marks the harshest high-level warning yet from Beijing about tensions with the Philippines over disputed seas where both countries have recently sent ships to assert their claims.

"Anyone with clear eyes saw long ago that behind these drills is reflected a mentality that will lead the South China Sea issue down a fork in the road towards military confrontation and resolution through armed force," said the commentary in the Chinese paper, which is the chief mouthpiece of the People's Liberation Army.

"Through this kind of meddling and intervention, the United States will only stir up the entire South China Sea situation towards increasing chaos, and this will inevitably have a massive impact on regional peace and stability."

"The U.S. strategy of returning to the Asia-Pacific carries the implication of a shift in military focus, and there is no better strategic opening than China's sovereignty disputes with the Philippines and other countries in the South China Sea," said the newspaper.

"The United States' intention of trying to draw more countries into stirring up the situation in the South China Sea is being brandished to the full," it said.

What... did China just think it was a show of good faith, when Obama went over to Australia and pledged more troops?

Obama pledges U.S. military power in Pacific
articles.cnn.com...:ASIA

President Barack Obama declared Thursday that the United States will take an expanded role in shaping the Asian Pacific region, with an increased military presence one step of that policy. "Our enduring interests in the region demand our enduring presence in this region," Obama said in a speech to the Australian Parliament. "The United States is a Pacific power, and we are here to stay." On Wednesday, his government announced an agreement with Australia that will expand military cooperation between the longtime allies and boost America's presence in the region.

'shaping the Asian Pacific region'... hmm...

The middle east is all but done, and the rest will collapse under its own weight, or submit under pressure.

Now the US is moving further east. Can't wait to see India's role in all this.

Yes, this has been in many alternative news sources for a while now. Personally I think the US should be no where near the bloody area. What right have they to go round the world aith thier big military stick smacking people. Sooner or later someone is going to smack them back, and it will be fully justified IMO.

Speaking from practical experience, Chinese people are up for a war with the USA.

They beat the US in Korea and the US lost in Vietnam, so where could they go wrong?

The Chinese military knows it couldn't take the US on in the air or on the sea, but they are working hard to rectify this.

Make no mistake, the Chinese resent the USA deeply for no other reason than it rather than China is the world's superpower. They are also a very nationlistic people who see themselves as 'peaceful' but think nothing of using force on a national level to enforce their 'rights'.

According to the Chinese, almost every country in Asia has terrority that belongs to China.

Don't be too surpirsed if China's rise isn't as peaceful as some would like to imagine.

China as it's own issues and goes to great lengths to cover or misdirect the truth. They have learned well from their past. The ships that are currently facing off are about the level of a US Coast Guard Cutter. I'm sure under water China has 1-2 Submarines.

Dont forget the fairly recent military excercise when a Chinese sub surfaced in the middle of the US fleet,
mega fail from the carrier escort group....AND lets everyone know its defenses are not nearly as strong as we're lead to believe. (and dont forget we aint heard anything much of their ballistic tragectory "carrier killer" missile for a while).
If that sub had had hostile intent the US would have been minus one carrier.... and probably a couple of its "hi tech" protection ships too.
The US better be careful, they might bloody one nose too many......

Now China wants to fight someone? They should be satisfied making everything people use in the most civilized of countries (and keeping the good stuff for themselves). In a war China is too-big-to-fail, so hoping cooler heads put a lid on it.

China is a siting duck..............They are not yet ready to take on anything but a local conflict.
If they push the Phillipine issue, then we are comintted to act in the Pillipines defence against this aggression.
As Taiwan is also bound to the US by treaty so we have more than one chance here,..... we stand to face a fair possiblility of an ICBM or two if it ever comes to a shooting war........This is all they have to reach this far.....theres no long arm to Chinese communism....
And they know it..........................

Boxer Rebellion Part II.

White boys will all band together and annihilate the Chinese again. Over 100 years ago Russia, Europe, US all banded together and toppled China. Made them pay mega tons of Silver for 'Reparations' to us as well.

Thus why China's been busy digging so much under ground. They know whats coming.

The Chinese trapped their diplomats in a siege. I think many nations wouldn't interfere unless it was something that direct.

Of course we also had to protect our interests in China
