Mount St. Helens may erupt soon!

SEATTLE Sept. 26, 2004 � A strengthening series of earthquakes at Mount St. Helens prompted seismologists Sunday to warn that the once-devastating volcano may see a small explosion soon.

"The key issue is a small explosion without warning. That would be the major event that we're worried about right now," said Willie Scott, a geologist with the USGS office in Vancouver.

The quakes were tiny at first, but on Saturday and Sunday there were more than 10 temblors of magnitude 2.0 to 2.8, the most in a 24-hour period since the last dome-building eruption in October 1986, Scott said.

I hope if this does have an eruption, that they would have time to warn all the residents of that area.Is anyone from the area? Have you been warned of anything?

What's wrong with a few cubic kilometers of potash in the atmosphere? It keeps down the oh-so-threatening global warming.

Seems like Mt. St. Helens is not the only restless volcano these days...

Supposedly just a possible dome building eruption correct? No widepsread damge is expected from what all the sites say. Nothing to be alramed about but a very interesting subject for me cause I was 4 years old playing in my friends yard in Idaho when the ash from the original eruption came down like it was snowing.

Well, those diagrams really suggest that dome might be going to grow little in near future... or "fly to the air".


BTW, using Mauna Loa's eruptions as any kind of indicator for general volcanic activity is pointless, its kind of volcanoes can erupt years continuously.

I'm guessing it'll probably cool back down again, every few years it tends to make a noise anyway.

Still, it's one to watch.

Excellent point, and I should add another: They're very different TYPES of volcanos and thus will behave in very different ways.

AT time there have been up to 2 earthquakes every two minutes for hours at a time.

Also, they started small, the last was a 2.2, last hour.

Maybe two weeks to a month be for she gets mad?

Good to know that.
All of a sudden it seemed like the whole world was going "volcano".
And with a "Yellowstone major eruption" long overdue, I was kind of worried there for a minute...
Right now it does seem like "Little sister" (St.Helens) is going to blow though.
Although we can�t know for sure until it actually happens.
I guess we can say she is "speaking" at least.
"When Little sister speaks, Grandfather will answer"...

Well regardless of "how" they behave it does appear that they ARE behaving. I'm interested to see how this evolves.

This can�t be good.
The earthquake page have been edited.
I saw alot of quakes there yesterday (big ones).
Now the most recent quakes have been removed.
As well as the page is not updating any quakes anymore.

The Mt. St. Helens page says this:
"Mount St. Helens Seismicity Information NOTE: September 2004 earthquake lists are not complete - many more earthquakes have occurred, and our processing is backlogged."

EDIT: Everything is back to normal now.
Except that the earthquakes have increased a lot,
both in strength and frequency.

Camera might show something else instead just plain noise if there wouldn't be dark.
