There have already been 18, 6.0 or higher magnitude earthquakes since the new year started. That seems rather high to me. Maybe it just seems high because of better monitering and instant news reporting. For me it just seems like a lot more Big quakes and extreme weather are happening all over the globe.

Well, earthquakes above 8.0 usually only happen once per year.

I think now we're safe for the rest of the year of 2012.

If another quake above 8.0 happens in the next months, that will be definetely NOT normal.

Descriptor Magnitude Average Annually
Great 8 and higher 1
Major 7 - 7.9 18
Strong 6 - 6.9 120
Moderate 5 - 5.9 800
Light 4 - 4.9 6,200 (estimated)
Minor 3 - 3.9 49,000 (estimated)
Magnitude 2 - 3: about 1,000 per day
Magnitude 1 - 2: about 8,000 per day

Thank you for confirming what I said.

Right at the side of "Great 8 and higher " I'm seeing the number 1 (one).

Just like I said...

Arrogant much...

This person was not arrogant... just correct...

Yeah I don't buy the "better monitoring" argument when it comes to 7+ quakes. So we couldn't detect a 7+ before?

There has been an upward trend in 7+ EQs in the past few years ...

ALL the aftershocks of the big Japan quake in 2011 were BELLOW 8.0 in magnitude.

Some of them were above 7.0 but ALL of them them were bellow 8.0

Earthquakes above 8.0 only happen ONCE per year.

The fact that we had two quakes above 8.0 today is amazing in itself. But I will let that "pass", because it was an aftershock...

But if another quake above 8.0 happens in the world some time in the next 8 months, that will be OUT OF THE NORMAL, and will be genuine MAYAN DOOM.

He is being quite arrogant.

However, to the point.

Most earthquakes which are classed in the high 7s usually start out as being in the low 8s. What i want to know is, how many 7.5/6/7/8/9... started off as an 8.1/2/3/4/5. The USA loves to downgrade international records, as can be seen with heaps of disasters.

You can be sure this year will see more than these two over 8's... after all, it's only April and the stats are just that... STATS, an average over many many years...

Just thought I'd bold the truth and underline the BS.

Just so that everyone is clear.

Australian news channels are reporting that a tsunami is not likely to take place - due to 'horizontal' motion as opposed to 'vertical' motion in 2004 .... Pheeeew!

You want to know? Do what I do and search for the answer and don't be lazy to prove your point just to show someone else is wrong. I despise lazy.

i personally dont think so...

18 x mag 6+ is actually low... on average...

there are about 5 x MAG 5s E/Qs per day,
2 x mag 6 per week,
and one 7 per month,
and 1 x mag 8 per year...on average...

so we are in the 15th week of the year,
there should have been 30 mag 6s ( by my reckoning)
not 18.././

check out last year, ( which was bigger than average)
and the year before...

same place U got your figures from...
i think U will find there were more then, than this year...

How the # am i being lazy???

I can't help it if initial reports suggest a quake to be a certain level and then gets altered to a lower one. You seen how fast the news lowered the earthquake today. Was an 8.9, suddenly changed to a 8.6.

You know what, here you #ing go:

arstechnica.com...

One thing that their analysis makes clear is that the overall rate of large earthquakes—those over magnitude 7.0—is about average right now. It's just that more of those quakes are above 8.0. We are experiencing a record level of 8.0+ quakes, but it's only slightly above previous records.

Maybe above 8.0 is an average...some years you have none...and some years you have 4!

Anyway...that horse has been beaten enough!

Let's get back to the quake at hand!

Sea level +80cm in Aceh is not so bad. Move along. I wonder if we can expect any effect on Japan.
