I did not pursue a degree in English composition, I got a degree in engineering (also retailing and consumer sciences) so I could be useful to the planet.

Advanced composition classes are mandatory in institutions of higher learning--regardless of what particular degree you pursue or are awarded. If you have graduated college, then there is no justifiable excuse for not understanding the fundamentals of sentence structure and punctuation.
