Georgia was named a NATO aspirant country for the first time on Thursday, the country’s deputy premier said.

Georgia, which has been proactively seeking NATO membership since a coup in 2003, was included on the list during a two-day meeting of NATO foreign ministers that opened on Wednesday in Brussels

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who attended a NATO-Russian council meeting in Brussels earlier on Thursday, has warned that Russia’s 2008 war with Georgia could be repeated if the South Caucasus state joined NATO.

Freaking NATO doing everything it can to create WW3... let's also mention that the ``coup`` that happened in 2003 was funded by NATO.

Ronald Asmus’ A Little War that Shook the World, published last month, says that in August 2008, as the South Ossetia War between Russia and Georgia was raging, the White House looked at the possibility of taking military action to prevent Georgian forces from being routed by Russian troops.

“The sheer scale of the Russian attack did lead several senior White House staffers to push for at least some consideration of limited military options to stem the Russian advance,” Asmus wrote. “The menu of options under discussion foresaw the possibility of bombardment and sealing of the Roki Tunnel as well as other surgical strikes to reduce Russian military pressure on the Georgian government.”

They were prepared for the United States to intervene, and I think they were prepared—or at least they were wanting to show the United States that their doctrine of the use of tactical nuclear weapons, if the US attacks, was serious, and they needed to take—the United States needs to take Russia very seriously.

NATO's rules say that a country can't join if they have unresolved border issues.

And it is the case with separatist regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

I guess this is it then if NATO plays hypocrit so openly.

Yep. I thought that Georgia wouldn't join NATO till the South Ossetia-Abkhazia situation was resolved... which would take a while... but no, NATO doesn't even follow their OWN RULES...

They If it were a war time, move they could openly take
the country, but it's a "peace time" decision, deny the enemy
oil and you've got a good chance at winning. in a conventional
sence anyway, membership will alow NATO to put it's boots

How is Russia being aggresive? If anything they have shown a lot of restraint and made NATO, Israel, and the West look like fools. They play chess while we play checkers. Do some research on the matter.

Coup or not, Georgia is a Sovereign State today, with its own constitutional laws and abidance to the rule of law. It has a right to exist in our world ruled by law too.

The Russian leaders must end its belligerance and bullying stances now. Those days are over. A new world had arisen, and mankind will no longer tolerate such attitudes today. And most certainly, the russian gov isn't going to win friends and neighbours by barbaric and threatening behaviour, for it only invites similar responses not only by one neighbour, but byall sharing the same street which is our world whom is not without equal courage and determiniation.

It is comprehensible of Russia's fear of having missiles and troops near its borders. Every human can understand such. But if the Russian gov behaves itself as a responsible member of Planet Earth's community, why the need for such fears?

Even though France, UK and USA - nations on Earth that follows the rule of laws, may had differences from time to time, but do they aim their missiles or place troops near their own borders? None. The trust is there, just as trust will be given to the nation of Russia, no matter the differences it may have, but only so long as it seeks peaceful concilliation and reconcilliation over differences, instead of belligerance and threats.

When that trust is earned and provened, there may be no need of even NATO, just as the Berlin Wall had been removed.

Mankind had suffered enough for centuries. Haven't we learnt enough? Are we and the innocent next generations doomed to live forever in fear and bravado, instead of peace to achieve only common aspirations in life shared by all mankind?

Utopia is a dream. But dreams do come true, if the will, perseverance and idealogy is worth the effort. In the course of human civilisation, we had seen many dreams realized with incremental steps. Look, Georgia is independent state. It can and should decide for itself, and while it is probably a mistake to go for far West while annoying nearby East - it is still their mistake to make. If Russia will strike , it will be their fault. Just as Georgia is guilty in previous war.

You know darn good and well the Georgian president seen all the Russian troops massing on his borders for an attack and was ordered to slow them down. They were headed way south of Georgia if know what Putin was trying to do.

Georgia did not attack first, Russia did as a message to Bush. Bush had the largest NATO Armada in history sailing to attack Iran when Russia pulled this stunt to force Bush to back off. WWIII was avoided in the bleachers of the Olympic games.

Bush agreed to turn the Armada around and Putin agreed to not push his troops any farther than where they needed to for self defense. Then they blamed the whole thing on Georgia so the world would not know how close we came to all out war.

Russia has stated the very same thing if Ukraine ever joins Nato....and you cannot blame them.

NATO signed a treaty with Russia after WW2 not to grow or expand further east than Western Europe.

Boy, how times have since changed huh?

The West should count itself lucky that Russia hasnt already attacked eastern Europe for joining Nato.

Russia has warned and warned again that placing those missile shield bases in eatsern Europe will get a response. They see the noose tightening around them. They will not be going to the UN to seek authority for no fly zones and the like that Nato does against smaller nations....

Once the line has been crossed the missiles will fly.....no warning at all!

The wests ignorance will be its downfall unfortunately.

They are no longer with us and is now Void

Russia could use the help with their harried borders. Having NATO taking some of the heat might be helpful for them. Considering that Georgia is surrounded by Islamists, being a NATO country must seem like a freaking godsend to them.

The problems with Georgia coming into NATO, is that Russia will have to negotiate in better faith with them. Considering their border restrictions with their more difficult neighbours, and their need for access through the
Caspian / Black Sea / Mediterrian Sea I imagine that doesn't seem like an awesome deal to the Kremlin.

Russia is part of Eastern Europe - it would be good for them to remember it on occasion.

I feel for Russia - I do. Their landlocked position isn't awesome for trade. Then again, neither is having your ex-military and KGB decide to create paramilitaries and take over all the "business" primary resources. (shrug)


Now, I would like to see NATO get out of the business of social experiments .... like that travesty we got going on in ex-Yugoslavia. They could have drawn that border how every they wanted to, and it got drawn to be a social experiment. I'm not sure if that's what is happening in the Armenian sort-of territories in Azerbaijan in reverse. I really don't get what they think we are doing in there, and no matter how much I look at it it still looks like Tragic Social Experiment.

I know what you are a trying to say, but let's be real here, what's ONLY important in Russia is the eastern side of it, where Moscow is.

If Russia had lost that during WW2, they would have been over. Same thing now.

And Georgia would give Russia a western-southern front... another front which they don't need. They have all the eastern countries as a big front (Ukraine, Latvia, Estonia, Turkey)...only a matter of time before Belarus falls...

They have China in the South which could easily invade with a few million troops and take Siberia. Then you have eastern Russia where they have contested islands with Japan. If war were declared today, Russia would have to fight on 3 fronts and they could probably just win the one with Japan while losing their western and southern parts of the country.

You have to see this from a ``non-nuclear world war view`` to understand why Russia is worried. Maybe they are wrong about seeing it like this but it doesn't matter as perception is reality.

Russia is weak and they know it. If Russia wouldn't have thousands of nukes, it would have been invaded by now.
