Several dozen Occupy Wall Street demonstrators were sleeping on the cushioned pews of a United Methodist church on the Upper West Side on Thursday morning when one of them spotted a man in plainclothes wandering through the sanctuary, apparently counting heads.

OWS is between places to Occupy. Since the new no sleeping in Zucotti Park rules, organizers have been looking for a space to resume in. They continue to hold daily actions and daily GA's but remain committed to having a safe place to reside. Options have included renting warehouses and claiming abandonned properties. In the mean time some Churches have opened their doors to Occupiers.

Flustered, the demonstrator confronted the man, who after several moments identified himself as a plainclothes detective. The demonstrator called the pastor, who was sleeping next door. But by then, the detective had left, along with his partner, who had been asking questions at a homeless shelter in the church’s basement.
...
A demonstrator then confronted the men and asked them to write down their names and badge numbers. One identified himself as Detective Kevin G. Clancy, who according to 2006 police records is assigned to the intelligence division of the New York Police Department. The men then left.

What is the purpose of this? Bloomberg excercising his command of his own private army? Why is the government reacting so strongly to bunch of "dirty hippies with no clear message"? I can't help but be nervous about this reaction with involvement from DHS and all we've learned this week about NDAA and the diminishment or attempt thereof of the 1st Amendment in places like Austin and Wisconsin (threads here and here). Freedom doesn't feel so free anymore.

this is what detective work consists of profiling your suspects, the next step will be creating a situation to arrest said suspects in this case protesters...

It is reminiscent of the commy scare crating a black book of current Terrorist/communist sympathizers.

the same thing was said about the hippies in the 60's they are all commies!!!! git em!!

Wait, so Bloomberg's private army is now counting the amount of opposition, and trying to learn new things about them? I wouldn't be as worried about the guy counting, as I would be the guy asking questions. Exactly how much do they now know about possible future plans, or some other aspect. While someone walking around with a clipboard silently moveing his lips is creepy, someone gathering information is far creepier.
