Indeed. The fallacy of every age and culture. And we are still groping in the darkness. Just as they thought so long ago they would go on forever. Until a hammer blow from space, or the Earth "burped" and it changed the environment profoundly. Today we think there could have been an asteroid or comet strike that occurred in the late Roman period. We now know that between 580 to 625 ad something really dramatic happened. It was so dramatic people stopped writing things down. It was the beginning of Europe's dark ages.It was so violent that everyone, the poets, the soldiers, the farmers all ran to the hills. Western civilization died, and had to be reconstituted from scratch. And the Vikings were the first to take advantage of that opportunity, when the sky cleared and the weather calmed down.
And then the weather changed abruptly again. And they were not prepared for it. And so it goes...
