Anti-Obama sign in Uptown neighborhood draws controversy

On Wednesday, crowds gathered at the corner of Calhoun and Coralie streets, looking at several signs depicting President Barack Obama as either a dunce, a puppet or a crying baby in a diaper.

Wow! Is this free speech or what?

Have to wonder if a citizen has the right to erect such billboards on private property or not? My initial thought is that they do, but have to give this more consideration before saying that with certainty.

Many forms of public statements or expressions are often classified as "art" and protected as viable presentations even though many might disagree or be offended by the "message".

This issue gives rise to a lot of questions. What do you guys think?

Definitely tacky, but if it doesn't violate city ordinance. It's his right.

I saw a whole lot of worse signs about others. Especially Bush.

That's a good one - LOL!
I forgot about Attack Watch!
Seems like Obama is a little more 'thin skinned' than Bush.

Thanks for bringing that point up. There were a lot of very nasty signs about Bush, some of them seemed quite threatening. These signs on the other hand seem harmless, although somewhat outrageous in violating certain standards of 'good taste'. Of course, like you said, unless they violate some particular law, I suppose they should remain in place.

Yea, I'm gonna have to go with Free Speech. Nothing about the 1st Amendment protects the president from criticism. They did it to Bush, they sure as hell can do it to Obama. I don't find anything wrong with it.

Thanks for the post - I tend to agree with you.

In fact, the more I think about it, I'm beginning to realize that the one billboard is rather clever as it does fit in perfectly with that whole idea about 'Hope and Change'!

Bush was controlled by the oil companies, both Jr and SR and clinton was controlled by his wife, and The EPA, They all were/are controlled by corporate lobbyists, just different ones.

Sad to say - you're probably right.
Will the day ever come when we can simply make a fair statement on his failure to perform up to standards without that pathetic and empty accusation being flippantly bandied about?

There is a bit of a backfire potential with the one with the diaper, because politician+diaper=gingrich, but other than that: It's free speech, not clever speech.

You are naive if you believe that Obama is the only president being run by the elite.

Unbelievable how they've managed to brainwash this populace.

All of them stink!!!

"Chocolate City" Nagin going in to talk to him about the signs! Got a kick out of that.

Come election time everyone puts up those huge signs in there yards for there candidate of choice. So I really don't see the big deal, other than It offends some people, can't have that now can we.

Down here in Louisiana, Napoleonic Code, you better believe there is some ordinance he is violating. They shouldn't have to look hard to find some obscure ordinance he is breaking. Got to love how they pick and choose which one's to enforce!

Do they have a right to do this? Absolutely they do. Will it be allowed by our fascist, totalitarian regime? Absolutely it won't.
