Good one.

Hey, remember when the G.O.P leader Barack Obama went to Brazil earlier this year and told them that by banning off-shore drilling for the U.S. instead of letting America drill, thus killing any prospects for American businesses to create possibly thousands of jobs for Americans, he wanted the U.S. to be their biggest oil importer?

That was funny, too, wasn't it?

I recall the GOP's friends and handlers; fawking up and poisoning the waters for tens of thousands of
fishermen and poisoning the maritime environment for millions of tax paying Americans.

That unreasonable Barrack, tisk, tisk

You got half of Americans not paying taxes. With the way you are thinking, the half not paying is either poor or seniors. I can't see how that is factually true. The Bush Tax cuts actually brought in more revenue, not less, because smaller businesses were able to hire more people. To say that the GOP wants to raise taxes because they want to have those not paying any income tax to pay, thats a bit of stretch.

That is funny. Then why was job growth pitiful during the Bush years? Why has there been more jobs created in both the Obama administration and the Clinton administration than during the Bush years under the tax cuts? Tax cuts paying for themselves is yet another republican canard not in the least bit founded in reality. I suppose "deficits don't matter" either and we can't have a surplus because the government "might spend it".

huge deficit increase

false

Should have been a pants on fire, IMO.

more lies

As far as the statement about half of Americans not paying taxes, it is true. However, this is another line to make it seem like the poor, worthless eaters in GOP speak, are not paying their fair share when actually much of that figure comes from tax breaks and tax loop holes popular amongst the rich.

Most of it comes from tax expenditures and the majority of those go to the top income brackets.

Even the Ayn Rand worshiper himself, Alan Greenspan, has declared the Bush tax cuts disastrous. He was the man who sold the tax cuts and he has seen the light. Why is it that the average American still believes the republicans nonsense when it is so demonstrably false?

I have an idea, how about rich people should not be able to lobby (give cash to) congress for special tax loop-holes and tax breaks that fatten the tax code while giving them a lower EFFECTIVE tax rate than the rest of America.

Effective Tax Rates of the Richest 400 Americans

The IRS has just released an analysis of the richest 400 American tax filers.

Contrary to concerns about socialism or a government takeover, the richest Americans, those earning an average of $345 million in 2007, paid about 16.5 percent in federal income taxes.

At the same time, BP was reaping sizable tax benefits from leasing the rig. I would like to point out that at this point, poor people don't pay any taxes in the U.S. Actually they collect money every tax season, more than they paid in. Here are charts from the National Taxpayers Union showing tax revenues by income percentile:

ntu.org...

I agree with some democratic policies but for the sake of our own well being, they need to stop feeding poor people with government incentives. Why work when I can sit on my ass collecting welfare, free healthcare(soon), subsidized housing, and food stamps. It is literally disturbing that the poorest 50% of the population in the US pays less than 3% of tax revenues. Wake up people and formulate an opinion of yourselves. Just because an article pities people doesn't mean there isn't an argument for the other side. I for one will not vote for Obama next year.

That is such total BS. Poor people pay taxes on every item they buy. The working poor have money taken out of their check every payperiod that doesn't even come close to their tax rebate.

Did you notice...those charts were 4 years old?

Don't let your ideology get in the way of your common sense!

You know, its funny. The corporate tax rate is what? Somewhere like 33%? That would be for those top earners (the rich). I know in a 40 hour check my rate is around 25%. I'm ok with that. This is income tax, mind you. Now working 40 hours a week for me pays around 37k a year. I am blessed to have a job that offers overtime a lot and an average year yields me around 60k before taxes. What strikes me as a bit unfair is when I work those 70-80 hour work weeks, those checks are taxed between 40&44%. The year that I make 60 ends up being taxed over 20k. My problem is that I don't understand why some (not all) wealthy folks who inherited their money can have tax breaks but when I work my a# off and miss out on spending time with my fiance and friends and family, it feels as though I am being punished for working hard. Why am I paying the same rate as a millionaire when I don't even make 100k? I don't know, maybe if tax dollars weren't so misused I wouldn't be mad. For example, why take poor peoples' money in a tax and then return all of it to them. Seems like it would waste a lot of money going through the system only to have all of it returned to them at a loss to the government as they have to pay all of the layers of bureaucracy that have to handle it. Wasteful. Yet we need to cut those fat cat teacher jobs. And taxing the (working) poor (by definition a family of 4 making 22k/year) does not seem like it will help much.

ane like I said, my husband's and mine income is less that the mean (that means 50% make more, 50% make less) ...
we always end up owing more at the end of the year, matter of fact this year I arranged to have extra taken out in hopes that hey, we might actually get a little back!! or at least not owe anything!!!

I know people at work that make less than I do, and well....they end up paying also...

and no, we don't get any handouts....we make too much money!!

in plain simple words, it's not the poor that isn't paying taxes, or the lowest 50% income earners....
it's people with kids, it's people who are running businesses out of the home, it's people who ring up alot of doctor's bills.....
people who can take advantage of the all those tax deductions and credits in other words!!!
