What kind of car(s) did/do you own?

My name is actually the car I currently own - the Honda CR-Z.

1st - 1982 Chrysler Lebaron (that stalled going DOWN HILL)
2nd - 1994 Honda Prelude
3rd - 2001 Honda Civic Si
4th - 1992 - Honda DelSol
5th - 2005 MINI Cooper S
6th and current - Honda CR-Z Sport Hybrid

It's been a while, last summer I bought a Volkswagen Passat 2.8 VR6, chip tuned, it did 160!


But I had to sell due to financial issues.
So now I bought an '87 Volkswagen Golf/Rabbit 1.8 with only 47,000 Miles on the clock. Bought it of the first owner which was an old lady.
It drives like brand new!

My 2000 VW Bug just died I had it for all of 6 months before the transmission went.
My 2003 Toyota Corolla died before that one.
My 2002 Toyota Camry was before...

I have bad luck with used cars, so I am currently waiting for my family to find a decent NEW car for under $15k. Easier said than done, it seems. But a new car = factory warranty for a few years, at least!

My first car was a 1978 Pontiac Trans Am. If you've ever seen Smokey and the Bandit, well, there you go. It got about 5 mpg with a tune up and it ate oil, but it was worth it. That car was a guy magnet, let me tell you. It was 8 years old when I bought it from my brother, and I drove it till the floorboards rotted out of it.



Before that, us kids had a communal 1976 Dodge Dart and a 1972 Dodge Polara to drive. (My dad was a Dodge man, obviously.)

After that...

2000 Ford Escort--I still have this and I intend to drive it till it dies. It is THE best car I've ever had. In the 12 years I've had it, it's been in the shop once, for a broken hose. And it gets great gas mileage. Every mechanic I've talked to said it's the best model/year car ever made and I could get another 100,000 to 200,000 miles out of it if I take care of it.

If I could go back in time I'd probably pick up that B-210 again....you could fix her with duct tape and a coat hanger, parallel park anywhere with room to spare, and the little gal was so small and ugly that you never had to worry about theft or break-ins.

I started off with a old bomb, a Ford Escort. Don't remember the model.
Then I got a RX7 Mazda...had that for years and then got a 'Family Car' Holden (don't know the model number)...got rid of that one and got a 4WD (safer for the kids! - that one was a Suzuki) and then got rid of that one and bought another Ford. Got rid of that one and got a KIA Rio, had that for a little while and got rid of that and bought a Volkswagen Transporter (great for camping). Still have that one now but bought another one as a toy, that one is a Nissan 350Z convertible..

I will prolly flog off both of them and buy a Triumph Bantum motorbike. I don't really need a car cos I have a work car so the next purchase will be motorbike.

1965 plymouth Belvedere II

440 cubic inch motor, brainless torqueflight, 456 gears, full cage, fibreglass front end.

Runs 11.50 with mufflers and street tires, can be driven daily but spends most of it's time hiding in the garage.

Had it for 22 years now. Man time flies...

I am both young and poor. Coming from a very poor family I've never had any help getting a vehicle so I've always had to buy my own stuff. Being both a college student and a parent of two, I can't really afford anything nice. But hopefully after finishing school I will be able to buy a new car with a warranty lol. So far my wife and I have owned crap - 93 oldsmobile that got hit by a drunk driver when my wife was taking the kids somewhere, he hit the front end and totaled that car but none of my family got hurt thankfully. Then we got a 93 honda civic lx, the thing only had one previous owner and I only paid $1400 cash for it with around 130k miles on it, but they must have never did oil changes because when it started breaking down we took the oil pan off and found A LOT of metal, the engine eventually locked up, I did get about 18k miles off of it though so I guess I can't complain at $1400 even though those engines can get up to 300k if taken care of. Now we have a 98 ford escort zx2 automatic that I paid $2600 cash for because the mechanic that checked it said it was pretty good and well worth the $3k he was asking for with only 77k miles on the engine. But it was time for a timing belt and the tires will need to be replaced before this Winter so I offered $2600 cash and he took the offer. Well this car has just been treating my wallet lovely. I'm serious, I got the belt, kit, and water pump from Advanced, and the labor was going to be around $250 - so about $500 for a timing belt in all. Autocheck rated the car above the average numerical range for 1998 Ford Escort ZX2 and KBB said private party price for Fair condition was around $2800 - so I thought I was getting a good deal after a professional mechanics confirmation. Me, get a good deal, yeah right. Well when they took the stuff off to change the timing belt they found that some gear was cracked and needed t be replaced, they had to order it from Ford and it costed $400 + an extra $100 labor. That puts me at around $3600 not including the costs of registration and whatnot and the $190 increase on my insurance. The thing came with a crappy factory radio that had no aux for me to use my phone, and no cd, and for that particular car you have to get a special custom dash kit which costed $55, rather than a $15 dash kit you can get for most cars... My friend and I found a broken sensor that we were able to easily fix but hat was another $20. Granted the vehicle has been running very well for me up until literally today, just the engine light was coming on but changing that sensor solved that problem. I have only had this car for about a month - and as I said, it has been driving very well without any issues, noises, or anything. It ran fine yesterday, but today when I tried to start it the damn thing would not start, it acts like it wants to but it just wont, thinkin it could be something fuel pump related. So there you have it, 3 piles of crap in less than 2 years... With the money I have spent on older turds I could have a new one 1/3 the way paid off, the only problem is that I have nobody to co sign for me and dealers will not sale to college students living on financial aid - a combination of grants, scholarships, and student loans, and working for minimum wage in the Summer - they say I don't make enough to afford a car payment, even though IF I was paying $320 a month on something - Ive calculated it and I would have spent around $300 less in the past 27 months than I have total on the three vehicles that I have owned, not including tax, tags, and registration fees, or the oil and tow truck fees. Insurance prices would probably cancel that out, so I will assume that I would have most likely been paying pretty much the same either way.

If you can come up with a few thousand, buy a 2012 Ford Fiesta. I was looking at cars for my younger brother who is stuck with a crappy '95 Ranger the other day. If you make a down payment of $3500 and stretch the payments over 5 years it came to $192 a month I think. I love older stuff and it's most of what I own but it's comforting to get in a newer car and know you can drive across the country without much of a problem.

I knew I had forgotten at least 1... I had a '98 ZX2, it was a money pit. The flex pipe went out of nowhere and the alternator just died while I was driving. In 1999. I bought it with a voided warranty a year to the day from when the guy got it from the dealership. Piece of crap and slower than I thought possible.

I bought the Elantra, Malibu and Stratus new. The Elantra and Malibu were the "family cars" and I hated (and still hate the Malibu) both of them. I knew my daughter was going to get where she needed to safely and without being stuck on the side of the road. It's a good feeling. The Stratus was just a "how fast can I make it" car. When the tree branch fell on it, I had paid off the loan 6 weeks before. That SUCKED.
