France Announces Withdrawal of Carrier: Is the Libya NATO Operation Too Costly?

France announced on Thursday that its aircraft carrier Charles de Gaulle would return on French territory for maintenance next week after being used for the NATO-led mission.

The vessel which is France's only aircraft carrier and Europe's biggest warship, will leave on August 10 and head to Toulon for several weeks of work, defence minister Gerard Longuet told Var-Matin newspaper.

Longuet defended France's latest move and insisted that Paris is still very much committed to the NATO-led operation in Libya. uk.ibtimes.com...

This look like the sign of NATO operation in Libya is getting too costly. Along with Afghanistan it looks like France is going to bankrupt even more along with others who tried to participate in it. How many times this Libya war is costing NATO everyday for this along with Afghanistan and Iraq? Probably a lot.

Actually it looks like some maintenance needs to be done on the carrier.

Machines need to be kept up you know.

there is no indication whatsoever that the carrier was removed for any reason other than to do routine maintenance. they only have one so maintaining it is important.
It has nothing to do with the financial state of France or the cost of operations.

I've never understood the argument that where any military is situated greatly affects the cost..

Surely this carrier costs roughly the same to run on a daily basis whether it's just off the coast of France or on patrol in the Pacific or stationed for action in Libya..

I wouldn't expect to see this carrier back in the Libyan theater anytime soon. These carriers are built to cruise at sea indefinitely if needed. Any and all routine repairs and service can be completed at sea unless there is a major problem. Sounds like the French are just calling in sick for the next 6 months.

My guess is that we are about to enter a new phase in Libya where the US is left to clean up the mess just as predicted at the start of this Kinetic Military Campaign. The climate is about to get hotter in Libya because reports suggest that Gadahfi's son is recruiting the Islamic element from within the rebel opposition to literally collapse them from the inside out.

This of course could just be some smack talk

Muammar Gaddafi's son said his camp was nearing a deal with Islamists within Libya's rebellion to isolate more liberal members of the insurgency, as a seized cargo of government-owned fuel docked in a rebel port.

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi's comments, in an interview with the New York Times, underscored attempts to exploit divisions within the rebels as they seek to recover from the killing of their military commander and push towards Tripoli on three fronts.

I have no reason to doubt the official story however the maintenance excuse is always the most plausible when you do need to pull out some equiptment for whatever reason.

Basically just have to wait and see.

A murderer worrying how much it would cost to kill a child. That is what you are telling us, although I understand what you are saying, I'm quiet sick of the world continuously mentioning how much it would cost to destroy Libya, but never mention how much it is costing Libya, the nation that is being destroyed.

Very disturbing propaganda war playing out..

If Gadahfi is able to collapse the rebel movement from within, what's next? The whole kinetic campaign will have been in vane and they are back to square one. What was the point? Meanwhile Assad continues to slaughter protesters in Syria with nary a glance from the major players in the world. Just a verbal slap from the UN.

This game is getting confusing as is following the players involved in it. Muslim Brotherhood anyone? They are ready to pounce in Egypt in order to reestablish a physical stronghold in the region.

What does this have to do with France's aircraft carrier?

I fail to see the connection.

France doesn't need to park a carrier off Libya's coast to attack it, they can launch missions from air bases in France for a fraction of the cost. The carrier was most likely a 'show of force' in the opening salvos, now they only need to maintain pressure on Libya, easier and cheaper with flights launched from bases.

The US launched its 1986 bomb missions against Libya from air bases in England (RAF Lakenheath and RAFUpper Heyford, specifically).

There's simply no need to keep a carrier there for this type of mission.

Ya i agree that's when Italy and Malta refuse to use the USAF as their base to attack Libya, it has to come from England to Libya. And i heard reports that the USAF pilots got off the plane after the mission back to England so badly they cannot even sit up. It's still better to bomb closer.

Hopefully though i won't turned into like the one in Iraq where a power vacuum was installed with an insurgency once Gaddafi is out of power. Also plus NATO already bombed and killed some people. Hopefully it won't be because when it is, it's going to bankrupt the EU even more.

Look at history. France has a habbit of playing a role in starting a conflict but never has the heart to fight it and always looks for a reason to get out. Remembering it was France who declared war on Germany in WW1 which brought Britain into it due a pact with france. And when Britain declared war on Germany in WW2 France was reluctent to enter but had no choice. Also France refused to be part of NATO. (it lends forces to NATO) When France isn't losing battles it's doing what it can to avoid them. Yet it continues to talk tough and look down its long nose at the rest of the world. I've always believed that "when" France gets invaded again the English speaking world should just sit back and let it happen instead of bailing them out yet again.
