Israel to seek UN opinion on maritime border spat

www.rawstory.com

Israel is to seek a UN opinion on its maritime borders with Lebanon in the Mediterranean, where lucrative offshore gas fields have been found, Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman said on Sunday.

"We will soon be presenting the United Nations headquarters in New York with our position on our maritime borders," Lieberman told Israeli public radio.

"We have already concluded an agreement on this issue with Cyprus... Lebanon, under pressure from Hezbollah, is looking for friction, but we will not give up any part of what is rightfully ours," he added.

Will the UN rule in favor of Israel or Lebanon on this one ? Seeing how Israel has more international pull then Lebanon , I tend to think that Israel will get it's way .

It would also seem likely that Israel might even go a head with construction of this off shore platform before the UN even rules , just to solidify it's claim .

Since has Israel ever listened to the UN?

So I guess they will use the UN as an excuse if they rule in their favor, but will ignore the UN when they rule against Israel. Oh the Irony

Maritime borders for Israel are 20 nautical miles; Gazans are 3 nautical miles.

however the border spat is one where Israel, Lebanon and Cyprus overlap eachother.

According to the linked article, Israel is looking for the U.N's opinion, not permission. They claim to have already concluded an agreement with Cyprus, leaving Lebanon to complain of the overlap of territory.

Kudos. Israel is not afraid to act as a sovereign nation in this watered-down-p.c. world. I only wish the same could be said for the current USA, and it's leadership.
