NBA expects to lock out players after sides can't agree on money

The NBA said Thursday it will recommend a lockout after the professional basketball league and players failed to reach a new collective bargaining agreement.

Deputy Commissioner Adam Silver said owners could not agree to the players union call for an average $7 million player salary in the sixth year of a deal. The current salary average is about $5 million.

I find it odd that two largest American sports league are having lockouts.

It especially got me thinking after Ray Lewis said that the lockouts would cause widespread crime across the country.


Do these lockouts have anything to do with the corrupt unions, socialists, communists, liberals, and most likely globalists, that are all trying to start chaos, and civil unrest in the United States. My guess is yes...

Hey man, once you stop giving Bread and Circus to the masses, something will probably give.

Good for the owners. Why do players think they should get millions of dollars to play a game? Pay them like everyone else with a special skill, maybe $30-$40/hour and lower the cost of tickets so you don't have to mortgage your house to take family to a game.

Wow really? NBA and the NFL...we'll still have hockey golf tennis and baseball but if there is no basketball and football season I'll mark it down as a serious sign of the downfall of America!
Perhaps we can finally [formally] introduce some other (international) sports to America like Rugby and Soccer.

Americans need football and basketball, period. Well at least the NFL. I can live without the NBA, though I love basketball. Both owners and players know this but in the end, people with money win. Hence, the owners will get what they want and the players have to give in...

The two situations are really quite different. The NBA players simply want more cash with no further demands placed upon them. For that they are greedy, selfish jerks, 99% of who would be day laborers were it not for their atheletic skills.

The NFL owners want to add two more games to the season and not compensate the players at all. Additionally, the players want the owners to pay for health insurance for older players who retired and who are now feeling the brutal affects of playing the game absent improved medical treatments and equipment and the owners are refusing. In the case of the NFL, the billionaire owners are being selfish jerks, many of whom got rich off the public dime, the public of course paying for the venues used by the teams, yet most of the venues being "owned" by the owners. Take a look at how George W. Bush made his dough when he was partial owner of the Texas Rangers. Its estimated that the owners are essentially asking the players to play up to 150 additional plays per season for some positions and with each play being a potentially career ending play, the players deserve to be compensated (regardless of how much they are being paid today).

The entire sports business in this country is a joke. A joke created by fans. Were the fans to simply boycott one major media market's teams for a season - no watching, no attendance, no purchase of merchandise perhaps these fools would realize what a great deal they have.

Paul Allen has a 414 foot yacht. He needs more money and is unwilling to pay for health insurance for a couple hundred gents who built the game into what it is today? The players have already indicated that they will contribute to the insurance.

In the NBA it is the players who are at fault. In the NFL it is the owners.

If this were true than all the players would be playing with no salary and living off their endorsement deals.

Either way though I have no sympathy for these guys. I understand that the public determines their worth and that's fine but I for one won't lose sleep over going a season without football.

I know the whole story, I just didn't want to get into it. But you explained it pretty well. Ultimately though, players have no leverage. I just feel for the old athletes that made NFL and NBA what it is today...

With the NFl being a $7.6bn industry and the NBA being a $4.5bn industry it certainly is not a nonsense topic. Massive amounts of small businesses rely on professional sports and should there be strikes, thousands of people will be out of jobs, from folks working in bars, to folks working in stadiums, to folks working at suppliers of both. It is unfortunate, but one of these leagues going out on strike has a major economic impact and thus is worthy of attention

I would say it's way over those figures. I wonder if people would feel the same if it was soccer? I can live without soccer but I can't live without football. Call me a meathead but on Sundays football is my religion...
