Computer glitch grounds United Airlines travelers

A United Airlines spokeswoman confirmed an outage, but would not speak to any delays or cancellations.

"At approximately 7:15 pm CT tonight, United Airlines experienced a computer outage interrupting the airline's flight departures, airport processing and reservations systems," the airline said in statement. "Our technology team is working to resolve the issue as soon as possible. We apologize for the disruption."

Allegedly, this is affecting the whole nation. It's a little strange how the whole network could be taken down. Are there no redundant servers in the network or does this run off a single datacenter? I imagine there are many, many frustrated travellers.

This is going to be interesting watching how this pans out.
Could this be hackers... or something more benign?

One never knows what will happen when we depend
so much on technology. I do find it strange that its
nation wide, I would think there would be a security
measure to prevent that from happening.

Another thing a little disconcerting (from the same MSNBC source):

An NBC News producer at LAX reported that passengers were unable to check in unless they'd printed out their boarding pass prior to traveling to the airport.

So, how hard would it be to forge a boarding pass?

oh that would be Lax right ...hmm along with a power grid failure, seems kinda lulz to me that everyone is so dependent on networks. What ever happened to manual labor, i mean, it did provide work for everyone right ? , or are people to lazy to even work these days ?

I am thinking without the computers they
have very little access to anything regarding
the airlines - what about radar for planes
that were in the air already. I don't like
the feel of this - let's hope it doesn't happen
elsewhere and that this smooths out quickly.

So with a copy of boarding pass they are
letting passengers on the plane, why would
they want anyone boarding at this time - they've
been grounded.

Lot of questions we don't have the answers
for yet.

As a long-time frequent flyer, both before and after 9-11, this seems like a cover for something to me.

Prior to 9-11, I had never experienced any computer glitches. After 9-11, this seems to be the excuse of choice.

I wonder how many people really believe it's a computer problem?

I dont know what is going on but something tells me to worry over this one.

No worries, its just the alphabet agencies demonstrating their power to hack everything,
and disrupt the every day way of life untill people scream for intervention.

As time goes by I am surprised we have not had
more updates on the situation. It will not be an
easy night to sleep until I know all is okay. Sorry
not to fear monger but I am concerned.

Don't worry, as I said, since 9-11 there have been plenty of these "computer problems". I was on a plane in the middle of the Pacific when due to a computer problem the entire West coast air traffic control went down (or so they said). After the announcement, they blocked the channel where you can listen to the pilot and the airphones went down. Their solution to calm people was to play another movie!

These issues always get resolved. It's not the known issues which should worry you, it's the unknown issues.

Yes, it's a little strange. It's only affecting United?

State-level cyber attack? if it was anonymous they would have said so to continue with their witch hunt. The fact that there is only one story: that it's a network connectivity issue, is a bit suspicious.
