Well, personally I think it would be pretty easy to tell them what it does. HOW it does that, like someone else said, many people today wouldn't understand. But WHAT it does is a pretty easy concept, people weren't stupid back then.

I mean something along the lines of:

"This a communication box. I hold this one up to my ears and mouth. Someone else, close by or even (insert distance measurement of the time) away holds one of these boxes to their mouth and ears. When I speak they can hear me. When they speak I can hear them. We can communicate over long distances"

Not really that difficult of a concept is it? I don't think so...

You could go in other functions of it, but considering it is an I PHONE that is the main function. Explaining the internet might be more difficult. Explaining that is plays music, makes calculations, and keeps time would be pretty easy too, I would think.
