Francis Crick, aged 88, has died in San Diego after a long bout with colon cancer. He was known as part of the team, along with James Watson, who discovered the double helix structure of DNA. He and Watson won the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1962 for the breakthrough discovery.

The man who helped discover the secret of life is dead.

Francis Crick, who was 88, died last night at Thornton Hospital in San Diego after a long battle with colon cancer. Along with James Watson, Crick was best known for discovering the structure of DNA the mysterious molecule that defines and determines every form of life.

Crick's name became scientific legend in 1953 when he and Watson, then just 36 and 24 years old, respectively, cracked the DNA code, revealing the structure and nature of the now-famous double helix of deoxyribonucleic acid.

Crick's name is synonymous with DNA and genetic studies. He dedicated his life to the study of heredity and the function of genes in both humans and in plants.

For many years before his death, Crick devoted his scientific life to understanding the biological foundations of consciousness.

He had been playing a significant role in the development of a new research center at Salk that will bear his name. The Crick-Jacobs Center for Computational and Theoretical Biology, which is also named for its benefactor, the Joan and Irwin Jacobs family, will study how genes in human DNA regulate brain activity, as well as how networks of nerve cells influence the way the brain works.

His DNA should be sequenced and made into a memorial with Watson's.

Nothing would be more fitting than a memorial made of the DNA of those to first model it.

Over a quarter-century ago, Dr. Crick wrote his conviction that DNA was introduced on earth by an alien intelligence, brought in a vehicle, a space ship. His theory was published as Directed Paspermia.

Crick argues that the Code of Life could not have arrived in a comet or embedded in a meteor as some have suggested. Anything living would have died in such an accidental journey through space. The only possibility, he stated, A primitive form of life was planted deliberately. Some of this is written on a webpage at onealclan.tripod.com... I became aware of it from the website's newsletter that said the information was given by Dr. Crick in an interview with Michael Drosnin, author of Bible Code and Bible Code II.

He was truly a great man.
