Large Hadron Collider rumoured to have found God Particle

Scientists at the Large Hadron Collider are rumoured to have found the elusive so-called "God Particle". A leaked internal memo contains unconfirmed reports that one of the detectors at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN, near Geneva, had picked up signals that could be the long sought after particle, called the Higgs boson.

I don't believe this to be true...just yet anyways. For one: The LHC is not even at full operational capacity yet. For one; They only recently set a record with the beam intensity. A real time status update on the beams is available here which also shows that it's not fully operational. LHC has also just been restarted after a winter shutdown and was recently handed back over to CERN to begin operations. There is also no direct mention of when this supposed memo was written.

Despite how this could be a significant discovery, this report did surface on Easter and the machine has only recently been restarted, so I am a bit skeptical.

Anyway, back to the article:

Writing on the social networking site Twitter, he said: "The Higgs rumours are from an internal, unchecked ATLAS document. Very bad science to leak it. Many mistakes are made in un-reviewed papers."

Many mistakes are made...emphasis on that please. The media are jumping to make a big scene out of nothing.

We will determine if the Higgs particle exists or not THIS YEAR...(it's all to do with that funny curve and restricting the limits) but if indeed this is true...absolutely inspiring and it fits perfectly in with string theory Yaaaay!

IMO, there is no way they found the Higgs boson.

They are still finding quarks that they didn't know existed and recently talked about a new "force" being discovered, so I strongly doubt that they ran the LHC at a high enough energy to produce the visible effects of a Higgs boson unless that is the new "force" - ie - the Higgs field.

I guess time will tell but I really believe it's a bit premature on their part.

I could be wrong but if true I think it likely that an evil renegade Catholic Priest well placed within the Vatican will steal this God Particle, and that it's likely going to take Tom Hanks a cast of thousands and several million dollars to get it back.

I think even the Illuminati might rear it's ugly head before it's all over!

Higgs particle will in noway prove string theory.
Comedians like brian green may be good narrators, but sticking blindly to
string theory think that they are somehow smarter than other scientists who
question the very basis of string theory.
So can brian define this strand of energy, whether heat, light, mechanical, sound, electromagnetic or magnetic etc.

Well..it may definitely help in our research for supersymmetry which in turn affects string theory

I have to agree with Blackpoison here I got duped by one of these articles last year. Although this was about the US project Fermilab having allegedly beat the CERN fellas to it.

Turns out it was just a rumour started by some Italian scientist on his blog.

I must have apologised about 30 times on that thread for being sensationalist.
