Definatly a sound thoery, there are so many varying theories about SHC that it's hard to focus on just one. In regard to that theory you would think it would be more common.

These cases seem to be seperated by many years in some cases and it comes and goes.

There have only been about 200 documented cases ever, thats a very select group of people compared to the number of people in the world.

Look up meatspin. I wont share the link and i dont know if you will find what im talking about, but a couple years ago one of the guys emailed it to me at work as a joke and it's horrible.... so dont say i didnt warn you....

Yeah i just looked for your handle, it's not as unique as some so it brings up mixed results.

Search for mine, i have only ever used that user name on ATS, Google Earth forums and Picasa. I still turns up on strange sites though.

I use google as ive always been fairly happy with it, although i used to always use Yahoo.

Before reaching menopause I could not imagine an inner source of heat in a human being that could possibly ignite a fire. Now I am sure that it is possible.

I have a theory that even with the male victims, they are all suffering with severe hot flashes, and most are also drinkers, possibly it is all that flamable liquid inside their body, and a severe hot flash hits and ignites the flame.

I know that when flashes are severe, you feel like you need to rip your clothes off and that is still not enough, it feels like a heater is inches in front of you and you cannot get away from it. Your skin feels like pins are pricking you, and your entire body is emanating pure heat.

Just a theory, but you never know. Some men do have menopause, including hot flashes.

Menopause?

Sorry i know it's a serious matter.... i just could help but having a little giggle.

You never know though you could be right. I'm only 26 and have had some hot flushes, when im unwell or have a virus. I know that it occurs more naturally later in life though.

It would have to be a severe hot flush to burn through bone?? Remember in the OP that some of the fires were estimated to be above the temp needed for cremation, being very high - above 950'c or almost 2000'f.

That is one severe hot flush

Another thoery i read and posted in the OP was that a bacterial infection could cause a rise in core body temp leading to ignition but this would be extreme considering any type of infection or virus normally only leads to a subtle rise in body temp. Although at times it can be life threatening when it comes to colds and flu's or even tonsalitus i doubt it could lead to combustion.

I was just looking through search to see if there was a thread on this before I made one.

I remember first seeing SHC on Unsolved Mysteries and it didn't sit too well with me at 8 and it still doesn't at 32.

I was just watching a show called Unexplained Phenomena and it had a case of SHC where the guy lived and his wife was a witness. His leg just started to smoke!

SHC is probably one of the most interesting phenomena out there mostly because we have no idea what causes it. I have seen the pics you posted and I dont believe for minute a cigarette did any of that. The way the person is burned and the degree doesn't make sense with a cigarette fire. The fire that comes from SHC seems much more intense.

I wont lie when ever I feel a part of my body get a little warm I start to get a little freaked out.

Yeah i was very similar, i was young when i first heard about it and it mystified me and as i said in my OP i had forgotten about it for awhile and then recently on the net and was surprised that after all the research and theories out there it still wasnt completly solved.

There are many good theories but nothing that can explain 100% of the cases and i find it strange that it comes and goes and sometimes there wont be a case for 10-20 years and then it emerges again.

If you had any new info you were going to add in your thread you can share here ig you want but i think this thread has passed it's use by date so to speak.....

Great thread and there's a good article below citing more cases - in one incident firemen witnessed 'a blue flame issuing with the force of a blowlamp' from a man's abdomen (apparently they had to shove the hosepipe into the abdomen to put it out).

Flames Roaring Out of Her Mouth

In this present-day know-it-all scientific age, a woman can erupt into flame in the full view of witnesses and her body be ravaged with flames while sitting on newspapers in a chair and neither the papers nor the chair suffer any fire damage, and the facts will be denied in a coroner's court because such things cannot be.

Cheers.

An old Yugoslav fellow told me once that his father caught on fire a couple of times while extremely drunk. One time his foot started burning and another time his chest. Both times they managed to put the fires out. This fellow said that it was a blue flame and it was alcohol fumes coming through the skin catching alight. Apparently it was quite common and this fellow seemed surprised that I had never seen it!
