Associate Professor Gregg Suaning, of the Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering and a project leader in the national bionic eye consortium, Bionic Vision Australia (BVA), said the new, 98-channel microchip, now undergoing preliminary lab testing, was a major step towards the goal of a functional bionic eye.

This should help millions of people around the globe to gain at least some very basic ability to see. This is an older bionic eye from a few years back:

Thats a big breakthrough, but I remember on 60 minutes on a few years back they had developed a bionic eye in Australia too. This one is probably much better for the patient though and hopefully it isnt too costly for the general public.

If my intuition is right the claim for "98-channel microchip" means 98 pixels. The first bionic eye used to have a matrix of 4 by 4 dots so 98 should be a major increase.
