Nature has a funny way of survival.

The unprecedented flooding in Pakistan in the latter half of 2010 disrupted the lives of 20 million people, but it also affected the country’s arachnid population.

With more than a fifth of the country submerged, millions of spiders climbed into trees to escape the rising floodwaters. The water took so long to recede, the trees became covered in a cocoon of spiderwebs. The result is an eerie, alien panorama, with any vegetation covered in a thick mass of webbing

That's pretty cool! If you didn't know that was cob webs from spiders, you would have thought it would have been the caterpillar from a gypsy moth doing such damage. I just hope the people left those spiders alone.

Also, where did they get the "millions of spiders" spider count? It seems odd to just throw that number out there like that.

Myself as well, yet, I am not a noble friend of arachnids.

Snakes? Any day, and all day long. . .perhaps even on a plane. Spiders? No thanks!

A lamington without coconut? You'd have to ask the strange person who put it there
My guess is he wouldnt climb back in the death tree to remove the coconut just so you can climb in balls out to get it. Its a bit silly dont u think? ha

It would be interesting to study peoples reactions, if placing one of the little creatures in the attached pics, in their home.

Offer it some Tea, perhaps?

That's so cool, I wish they somehow stuck a camera up inside that web of doom, imagine how many spiders are up there. I had no idea that spiders live together like that, I always had the idea that spiders were lone rangers who just live alone and do their own thing. Maybe it depends on the type of spider, I'm no spiderologist (?). Even with the flooding I would think that spiders would give each other their own space, you know? But thousands of them crammed up into a single tree? That's spooky, what else are they capable of? I'll be laying in bed tonight trying to fall asleep, and a mass of spiders will materialize from underneath my door, 'Little Nicky' style, and form into some demonic spider monster who eats me.

One thing I'm wondering is why aren't the trees dead? Wouldn't encasing them in webs cut off most of the light the tree needs, and kill it? Or do the webs allow just enough light through for the tree to survive?

Oh my goodness

Those trees are my worst nightmare - I go bears-neck at the mere sight of a money-spider - it would be a padded cell for me if I came across anything like this.

I always thought spiders didn't like living together like this - and if it's true, isn't it it amazing that they changed that in a short time, in order to survive.

What they've actually managed to is trap the Locusts which have been spreading Malaria.... so i suppose something good has come out of a disaster
