Philadelphia-Bound Turkish Ship Detoured
BOWERS BEACH, Del. - The captain of a Turkish merchant ship headed into Philadelphia harbor falsely told a Coast Guard inspector the vessel had a bomb on board Thursday, forcing officials to order the ship to turn around, an FBI spokesman said.

Yildirim Bayazer Tumer, 46, became agitated when members of the Philadelphia Coast Guard boarded the ship for a routine inspection Thursday morning, said Barry Maddox, a spokesman for the FBI's Baltimore field office.

Tumer told an officer that there was a bomb on board that was set to blow up when the ship docked at the port of Philadelphia, Maddox said.

I think the man was incredibly stupid, or..... it was planned as a diversion. More than likely a diversion. Wonder what was happening when all eyes and attention was on that ship???

To keep the info on this topic current, the Turkish Captain was in court Friday and charged with two violations of Federal law, if convicted on both charges this Captain will face up to 15 yrs in prison and up to $500,000. All this because he was impatient with the security procedures to protect the US.

WILMINGTON, Del. (Reuters) - The captain of a Turkish cargo ship who caused a security scare when he said there was a bomb on board his vessel was charged in a U.S. court on Friday with making a threat and a false statement.

Turkish national Yildirim Bayaver Tumer, 46, was not asked to make a plea at his appearance in U.S. District Court in Wilmington, Delaware, and was ordered detained until his next court hearing on Tuesday.

This Captain looks like he will become the "poster child" for what not to do when bringing your ship to port in the US. While I would doubt that the full penalties will be enforced here, this man will pay for this threatening incident.

WILMINGTON, DE (AP) A Turkish merchant ship captain accused of falsely telling the Coast Guard there was a bomb aboard his vessel will continue to be held in federal custody.

At a hearing today before a federal magistrate in Wilmington, an attorney for Yildirim Tumer waived a detention hearing.
