So i found an article that stated that the Japanese government was warned that this could happen. I would not set up a nuclear facility in a country that has over 1500 earthquakes a year.I see it will be another nail biting day to see what happens over there. im sorry if this post has been done already

They were only notified in 2008 long after the plants were built, but it seems to me like the problem was created when the plants were built to inadequate specifications to begin with:


The plant was only designed to withstand 7.0 magnitude quakes but the massive disaster that struck last Friday measured 9.0 on the Richter scale.
Maybe they should have built the plants to withstand a 9.0?

I think that scale is logarithmic, so a 9.0 is something like 100 times more powerful than a 7.0, right?

There's nothing they could have done since 2008 to make the plant 100 times more earthquake resistant, that I know of. they could maybe make some incremental enhancements, but an improvement of that magnitude must be addressed in the initial design.
