The navy's first amphibious landing ship, and the largest ship it has ever had, was launched in Spain overnight.

The ship, named HMAS Canberra, is able to carry helicopters, tanks and other heavy equipment, with a length of 230m and a displacement of 27,500 tonnes.

news.ninemsn.com.au...

The first of two hulls being built in Spain is on it's way to Australia for fitout..
They are actually aircraft carrier hulls but Australia has had them built more for choppers, tanks and troops etc..

We could have used this in The Queensland floods as our other ships were recently declared unseaworthy..

I note it still has a jump ramp so maybe may take some jets..

Looks like an Ark

Gilly was over here last week, Oz Navy wants to borrow one of our Frigates for a while, I think they'll get HMNZS Te Kaha.
Too many commitments, not enough ships

Didn't know we wanted to borrow a ship from NZ..
But I know there was an uproar during the floods when they realised the two ships of use were both out of action..
I heard one only had 2mm of hull left due to rust..

Yes, it looks like an Ark but will look different once fitout is done..
I get to see it come through the heads..

Those are some huge doors down the side of that thing, I'm not sure it's as big as it seems, look at the 4th picture it has a van beside it and it's not all that huge.

Hey, bug off...
It's the biggest ship we've ever had in Australia..
Even bigger than our old carrier the Melbourne....

I saw a pic once of the HMAS Mebourne with the USS Enterprise..
The Melbourne looked like a liferaft..

Great post BiB, hadnt heard about it.

We really need to step up to the plate here in Oz eh., We are probably outgunned even by our brother kiwi's.

( that being said, we do have the world's best SAS )

I hope that was sarcasm..Though I like our kiwi brothers..

OZ does OK for such a small population..
Our main problem is we have so much coastline to defend..
Mission impossible....

Sarcasm? Me? Yeah, a bit of tongue in cheek.

And we agree, I love the kiwis, we should annex the place.

My point is exactly as you stated, we are too big, with too little.

Yep and I helped build the accommodation at Tindal airbase which was in Katherine at that time, so what's that got to do with the price of eggs, all it means strategically it was the best thing to do and should of been done after world war 2 when the Japs had a go , you don't need to be a expert to know that ANY country that was going to invade would come from the top

My point is don't worry about Indonesia they are as harmless as a fluffy toy, anything else was just fear mongering and it is still going on till this day

If they are for copters, why the ski jump on the front? That seems odd. I thought that feature was for launching winged aircraft.

Your point is conceded Wal.

I never believed the hype, was very suprised, however, when it happened so quickly.

So were my peers.

Beasley never moved that quick on anything, would love to have seen the intel. ( I was RASIGS).

Yeah I mentioned that..
Though I suppose it's good to have the ability..
The hull is actually a small aircraft carrier design..

I reckon it was influenced by the US from a strategic point of view,

I was told that the homes we were building were for the US air force families, go figure that one out, don't know how true it was but came from someone high up over looking the project and he had that twang in his voice

Anyway that's off topic,

cool looking ship wonder why it wasn't built here ? maybe they didn't want the repeat of the Collins class subs

Wal

oh and Mungo did have to google RASIGS nice one

A mate of mine, an ex sub cmd, was involved with the building of the collins.

He said he wasnt game to get in one outta dry dock. Out to sea he said they were a deathtrap with a double skin
.

There is a thread right there about that ~sT*~fight.

He was one clever fella.

Something about inner skin // leaking pipes // outer skin.

Make you full of confidence.

No spanner hatches for genius pressurisation reasons.

And no way to refloat the boat.
