Trying to stay ahead of that wave, the CIA has put together a 35-member task force to look at where the uprisings might spread next. The sudden revolt in Egypt took the global community by surprise, and U.S. intelligence officers are looking at several different factors to gauge where and if this movement might spread -- they will look at the role of the Internet and social networking, the allegiance of various militaries, the youth and the unmet expectations of those who live in these countries
According to U.S. officials, all CIA station chiefs are being immediately tasked with examining these factors, including the strength of opposition movements, in their assigned countries.
There's lots of speculation going on over the fast-breaking events in Egypt -- but Director of National Intelligence James Clapper's claim yesterday on Capitol Hill that the Muslim Brotherhood is "largely secular" and has "eschewed violence" doesn't need to be speculated upon.
The Brotherhood has not only described itself as an Islamist group, committed to implementing Sharia law, it spawned Egyptian Islamic Jihad -- which offed Anwar Sadat in 1981 and later joined forces with Al Qaeda. Another Brotherhood offshoot is Hamas, the terrorist group that holds Gaza in its bloody grip. It's no fan of the Camp David peace accords with Israel, either.

WASHINGTON – Declaring history in the making, President Barack Obama assured Egyptians on Thursday the U.S. will help its Middle Eastern ally shift from chaos to democracy — provided the government change is genuine. But Hosni Mubarak's refusal to quit sowed more doubts.
Asked about the uncertainty ahead, especially with respect to the role of the military, presidential spokesman Robert Gibbs said, "I don't think we have to fear democracy."
Nancy Pelosi, the House Democratic leader, told her Twitter followers that the young people of Egypt were leading the country to democracy. "Their actions are an inspiration to the world," she wrote.
"I like to be optimistic at this time," said Rep. Nita Lowey of New York, the top Democrat on the House Appropriations subcommittee that oversees foreign aid. She called the events in Egypt "momentous for the region and the world."
