It's been revised a few times by now, but the Richard Gross book, 'Psychology: The Science of Mind and Behaviour' is a classic introduction and is easy to read. You could probably pick it up 2nd hand for very little cash.

One of favourite books, if a bit intense is the neurobiological basis of violence, a truly educating and wonderful book.

If you want something a bit less intense, then Hardwired behaviour by Laurence Tancredi is pretty good.

If you really want to look at the dark side of humanity then talking with serial killers by christopher berry-dee is worth a look.

Any of Jung's work, especially the stuff about the anima/animus and the collective unconscious.
Stanislav Grof's work in transpersonal psychology,
and Timothy Leary's neuro-psychology, consiousness circuit writings
