while well worn, it is certainly not defective. it is designed as i have stated.
i appreciate your humor, however i am serious.
if each lodges have their own flavor, could this ring represent the character of the lodge my great uncle jimmy belonged to. it is unclear how he came by this ring. it may date back to the 30's even so.

You would probably do better by taking this into a masonic thread this one happens to be about college fraternities and sororities.
FYI though be careful about how you word stuff around here concerning the masons they tend to trounce on any would be trolls. As far as the goat thing goes you are starting to lean towards the occultish which masonry is totaly not about. Do your best to stay away from troll pits like freemasonrywatch.org all of their spew is totally bogus. Im sure Masonic Light, Mirthful Me, or Alex Kennedy will be happy to help you out with any questions you might have. They have been super nice and cooperative with any questions that I have had in the past Hope all that rambling helps!

It seems almost every fraternity is having their national conventions this summer. Does anyone have any great stories?

I remember our Los Angeles convention was made into a huge hollywood red carpet event. There were newscasters to interview people, camera flashes going off, video cameras rolling, and there was bright lights all throughout the ball room. We had a couple famous alumni come and do their thing. Got a picture with one. It was really a great time. I had never seen fireworks go off inside a building before (excluding arenas and stadiums)

Any other stories?

First of all I would like to say I was shocked and saddened when I realized they pulled our board
All those hours wasted away on the internet in the form of our discussion board...lost. I hope we can all continue our discussions via email or u2u or whatever it is we have to do.

But back to what Slick was saying about conventions. Every year we send our chapter president + one other VP/higher up that we vote on to Convention, and as a chapter pay for their airfare, etc. I was voted once to go with our pres, but a week before the trip I broke my leg and didn't think flying to IN would be a great idea, so another VP went in my place. So hopefully I will make it to Convention someday!! My boyfriend's fraternity's convention was actually just in San Diego last week. So yes, I would have to agree that there are a lot of conventions being held! How often to most orgs have conventions? I think my sorority has them every other year. No interesting stories to tell though :-)

i was interested to learn that many of these organizations call their meeting "Conclave" (like the meetings of the cardinals and popes) which means literally "[Locked] With a Key" since the chambers of the pope and cardinals meeting place can literally only be opened from the inside once locked. i thought it was interesting....

That is interesting chysolaras. I wonder which organizations call it that and why (if it ties into the religious aspect of the org or what). Phi Kappa Psi just had their convention here, its called the Grand Arch Council. Perhaps someone familiar with their house can figure out the relevance (if any) of that name?

I've been watching this board from the sidelines for some time. Just today did I register. I've pretty much agreed with slick on everything he has posted. I'm glad he has been sticking it to the man and creating an environment where Greeks can freely talk. Hopefully you won't have many more problems here.

As far as conventions go, I remember the first one I went to with one other guy who was 21 and two guys who were minors. It was in Minneapolis and we had about a 10 hour drive. The minors begged for us to take them to an adult bookstore, but the entire drive we found nowhere. In Iowa there are no magazines except playboys and the minors wanted hardcore. There was also no places in Minnesota either. We really couldn't believe it. On the way back, on the outskirts of Omaha we found a true to life adult center. They sold a 20 mag. stack of pornos for $5. They also had the movies in the back, but we didn't want to experience that.

Oh yeah, and the convention was fun too.

Thanks for the sentiment and to all the others who have emailed and u2u'ed me the last couple of days. I'm glad this thread has not been taken down yet.

I was watching Dawson's Creek this morning and noticed that the gay character Jack was a member of a fraternity at college. The fraternity was planning their formal event and, although some crude gay humor was involved, the fraternity members did not mean harm by it, but were simply acting like guys do. It was refreshing to see a gay man be loved so genuinely by his fraternity brothers.

I note this as one of the only positive media storylines concerning greeks. I wish there were more.

i have a masonic ring that has been handed down to me. ( circa 1940's?)
my ring only has the compass/protractor symbol with the "g" inside it.
what makes mine unusual, is that the compass is taller than the wideth of the protractor. ( unlike the avatar of this symbol above)
when my ring is turned upside-down. it has the perfect likeness of the "goat of mendes". i wouold like to know if this is of any meaning to anyone out there.

dr goodrich

The ring with a protractor instead of a square (or sometimes the protractor UNDER the square) is the symbol of a "Past Master" i.e. someone who has served as "Master" (President) of a Masonic Lodge. In Lodge the Master is addressed as Worshipful (Honorable) Master...his Office title is simply Master. Same way with the State-wide (President), called the "Grand Master" of the Grand Lodge. He is addressed "Most Worshipful Grand Master." (Many college fraternities have mimicked this title or modified it with the use of a similar word like "Worthy" etc.

As there is no "official" description of the symbol, the fact that the compasses are taller than the width, etc. is of no significance. ...just the way the ring designer made it.

Regards,

Senrak (a Past Master)

Does anyone know about the Sigma Phi Society. I heard they were one of the first fraternities to use greek letters (somewhere after Phi Beta Kappa), but I haven't been able to find any info on why they didn't survive, if they merged, and all the timeline type information. If someone could help me out I would appreciate it.

Also does anyone have the Phi Beta Kappa initiation that I could have? I know they aren't a fraternity anymore and since their ceremony is open, I'm sure there won't be any problems on sending it. Let me know if you have it or where I could find it if it's on the web somewhere. Thanks.

Just a thought that crosses my mind occassionally...

Every now and then I will hear someone refer to their "brother fraternity" or "sister sorority". I have heard that every Panhel sorority is assigned a national brother IFC fraternity or vice versa, something to that effect. I have also heard that brother fraternities/sister sororities are obsolete, or that they never existed in the first place. Does anyone know what's up with the brother fraternity/sister sorority system? I heard once that my org's bro fraternity is Theta Chi, but we never did anything to recognize it (ie we didn't do things especially with Theta Chi or anything). Slick this might be something you know a thing or two about, working for a national HQ. Did such pairings ever exist, and if so, how were they determined and when did it end? Any thoughts/comments are appreciated

And for the record this isn't referring to a Big Bros/Lil Sisters program, which I know is frowned upon nationally because it usually involves hazing.

Nikkerbokker, most fraternities outlaw any such relationship between organizations. This may be different with organizations that were founded, such as some sororities, by fraternity men. Some chapters have their own special sweethear sorority that they do practically everything with.

Here is a resolution from Sigma Tau Gamma outlawing such practices:

www.sigmataugamma.org...

I haven't really looked into this thing. I know in my organization it is banned in the Constitution. Many others have resolutions similar to STG. The reasoning the STG uses is the common reason why there aren't sister organizations with fraternities.

Thanks Slick. You always have excellent references to back up your point!

I didn't think any such alliances were in existance still, if they ever were. Especially because Big Bros/Little Sisters are specifically banned from most orgs as well, although (at least at my school) they are still very very common. Big/Lil Bros are banned in my sorority bylaws, we were informed of this about 2 weeks into our pledge semester, however I personally have Lil Bros as do many members of my house, and every fraternity on campus gets Big/Lil Sisters for its members. One fraternity I know on my campus got in huge trouble with their nat'l because they were caught having a Big/Lil Sis revealing night, we're talking a couple years' social probation and almost having their charter pulled. Although I have heard at some schools that Big and Lil Sisters can sit in on most informal fraternity meetings, just nothing involving ritual. How is it at other schools, any comments?

I have heard about sweethearts of course but not a sweetheart sorority. Unless you count that XYZ has the prettiest girls and therefore the top fraternity, ABC, only does stuff with them. But I don't think that's what you're talking about

Other threads may exist because there are over 660,000 board posts! I can't keep an eye on every one of them, sheesh...

If a representative of a body has the right to request information being removed, then I will deal with the matter as I see fit.

If you have problems with mutual respect among ATS and other parties, then go to another website which is happy to violate international legal systems.

Yes, Sigma Phi was founded at Union, and still exists. They have a chapter at my school.

Where the hell did this come from? I thought he had his own thread going at the top of the board. Why come and ruin our conversation?

Thanks googler. Do you know if they have a website? I'll go to the Union college website and see about other info.
