Question on an object I have just witnessed

Hello, earlier this evening close to 8:00pm eastern time I witnessed a strange object in the night sky while I was walking my dog. It looked like a planet or you could compare it to the North star. Very bright and easily stood out from the rest of the twinkling lights in the sky. It caught my eye I gazed at it for a while and it quickly dimmed out and appeared to fall straight down towards the horizon in a perfectly straight line, My question is has anyone ever witnessed anything like this what could it have been? I am intrigued for the fact that it was stationary like a star but then suddenly dropped.

It sounds like a shooting star. I have seen one just like it.

Well thanks for bringing that other thread to my attention StarTraveller. I can not determine if it was an asteroid? I do know it was stationary for quite a while, it looked like a bright planet. The funny thing about it was the fact that it slowly moved in a straight line towards the horizon. Literally looked like a shooting star but all the ones I have witness in my life never moved in such a linear path and so slowly.
