Its christmas and I am all excited, (I always get excited at xmas) being around the family and watching the little ones opening their presents and then tucking into a nice meal and getting tipsy on the sherry and whiskey. Anyone else excited or is it just me?

Yay... glad you are excited

I'm not, not really anyway. I haven't even gotten into the feel of "winter" yet (the weather has not cooperated, rain but no snow, just gloomy) and the family stuff and busy-ness of the holidays just does not sound appealing to me - yet. Perhaps that will change as things get closer? Hope so. Fingers crossed.

Santa Clause doesn't come to the ghetto.

Christmas kinda lost its cheer for me after I kept seeing all of those commericals, the ads, and hearing the songs, over and over again. It used to be fun, when I was a kid.

I never even kissed someone under the mistle toe.

IT'S CHRISTMAS!

Love it. Although I woke up this morning and my two cats had smashed up the Christmas tree, it was lying on the floor and the bobbles were everywhere. They have been eating tinsel quite a lot too. So I've been calling them both Grinch all day.

Christmas time is my absolute favorite time of year. I love it all the snow, the hustle, the bustle...

Before the kid, my wife and I used to drops 1000's on each other, now we are lucky to get each other just one thing, and the funds are alot more limited for the little guy, but for some reason the season is so much more special with him around.

Christmas isnt about the gifts, its about love and family and I am blessed to have so much of both.

Merry christmas everyone!!

I sit alone in my tattered living room sipping cheap wine from a chipped glass. This isn't a happy month. It's not even a normal month. Every year, people spend copious amounts of saved income on meaningless bits and bobs. Every year, my father inches closer to suicide from debt. He can't help it, he would be heartbroken if there wasn't a Christmas in his house. It grows and grows, the commercialism sucking us dry and filling us with more sand. I'm nothing but a desert, now. An arid wasteland of endless worry and doubt. Christmas is dead. Let your greed consume you.

Oh I think I am more excited than anyone I know right now. So excited I can't sleep. I am leaving next week for Europe to see my bf stationed overseas. I havent seen him in almost 6 mths and I can't wait!! I have missed him like crazy and I get to spend the entire holiday season with him. It will be so hard to come back
but at least I get 3wks with him and I hope they drag by really slow.

I have always been very grinch around the holidays because well my family doesn't make them worth while and I don't mean presents, well on their end it is. They only seem to care about what you will get them and I don't do presents. I won't buy gifts because I am expected to and I won't be told what to get and then given the look of "what the heck is this" when they open it and it's not what they asked for. I'm not a bank and I work hard for my money and when I do buy presents for someone it will be out of the blue and because I wanted to. I am not gonna go broke at Christmas over material possessions people seem to demand from me. I guess cards aren't enough for them so I even stopped sending those. I haven't been to a holiday dinner with my family in years. They argue and it ruins everything so I stay home or go to a friends house and either way i am quite happy with it.

This year however I have a reason to be happy and I look forward to the holidays which has thrown my friends off lol They keep asking what happened to me

It's nice to have someone who when asked what they wanted for Christmas their answer was me, nothing material just me to be there. That means more than any present and I wish people would really understand the meaning of Christmas and not the monetary value many seem to put on it. It should be about being with loved ones no matter who they are, not presents.

I hate this time of year. The whole emphasis on family thing is very painful to those of us who don't have families to spend it with or have had something traumatic happen on a holiday. You have weeks of everything and every one around you forcing reminder of what happened all in the name of celebrations. It may be a time of celebrations for some but for others it is a time of mourning.
You have friends who don't really get it and say things like "I would invite you to have dinner with us, but you would probably feel uncomfortable because there will be people you don't know." but what they really mean, is I really don't want you there because its a "family thing, not a friend thing." even though we spend the rest of the year calling each other sisters and having our kids call each other auntie
Then on top of it if you are a divorced parent, the "other parent" the one who doesn't do most of the work, gets court ordered holiday visits you don't even get to be with your kids on those days, and two day later deal with questions like 'So Santa came to both of our houses?' ' How come Santa's writing is different at your house than it was dads" and "It just doesn't seem like Christmas 3 days later. can we open the presents later, I want to play with my new "insert toy name" that dad got me." And having that something be the same thing you got him only dad got them the newer version, when you scrimped and saved to get the best version you could afford.
I think I may start a thread on the break down of the family and how it affect the holidays.

I hear you, if you asked a teenager what they most like about xmas the common response will be 'presents' but as you get older you begin to see xmas differently, well I do anyway. I see it as a time to spend with my family and share good old banter over a sip of sherry and a mince pie. We don't have a TV in our household so we aren't taken over by the commercialism which is most definitely a good thing. I hope you have a smashing xmas and an even better new year.

blimey LightBlue, I am sorry to hear your troubles and woes around this time. Please do not think you are alone at this time as there are many people who enjoy your conversation and support you in your time of need with happy thoughts. I agree with you when you talk about people getting in to debt over this time, I have never been able to understand why people spend so much on their children only to find themselves in an enormous amount of debt in the new year its absurd. But that is commercialism for you. My advice to all would be switch off the TV and listen to the radio.

From me and my family we wish you happy thoughts and a fantastic new year.

Wow I got goosebumps for you when I read the above, I am so happy for you. I hope you have a great time although I hear its very cold in europe right now wrap up.

IMO the only logical answer as to why people get into debt over xmas is either due to guilt or weakness. Adverts and peer pressure force the weak to spend their money on things they don't need or things other people don't need its a very strange ball game indeed.

This year however I have a reason to be happy and I look forward to the holidays which has thrown my friends off lol They keep asking what happened to me

Good on ya you go for it!

I understand, it must be hard for you, I am sorry that life has treated you this way. Have you ever thought about working in a soup kitchen over xmas? the reason I say this is because I know Xmas can be hard on many of us and the deeper we spiral down in to this state the easier it is to forget about others who are worst off than us. Perhaps by doing some kind of volunteer work it will instill that little bit of compassionate pick me up that IMO you crave for.

From me personally I hope life shines a light for your 2011 and I hope that you have a great time with your children when they are spending time with you.

You are not alone in this position, coming from a "broken" family it can be terrible being seperated at christmas.
dont ever make a child decide which parent they want to spend christmas with, absolutly horrible thing to do do a child.
