New species of bacteria found in Titanic 'rusticles'

A never-before-seen microbe has been found in the wreck of RMS Titanic.

The Halomonas titanicae bacterium was found in "rusticles", the porous and delicate icicle-like structures that form on rusting iron.

Various bacteria and fungi live within the delicate structures - first identified on the Titanic - actually feeding off the rusting metal.

The find is described in the journal International Journal of Systematic and Evolutionary Microbiology.

Proving that there are other big leaks besides Wikileaks, the Titanic has yielded an new life form that it didn’t even take NASA to find.

The Halomanas tianicae bacterium literally feeds off of rusting iron and metal in the deep ocean.

This could be potential trouble for all of us with the oil platforms, many of them old and abandoned that are littering the oceans as this bacteria may in time end up eating through their supports and even sealed off well heads leading to possibly many more ecological disasters similar to the BP well blowout this summer.

A number of YouTube videos making the round in fact seemed to show some microorganism moving in and out of the steel around the broken well head.

Could these have been Halomonas titanicae or some other unknown cousin that reside only in very deep water like where the BP well was drilled and the Titanic came to rest?

It’s certainly an intriguing question, especially considering the results of these published tests are from bacteria grown from 19 year old samples from the Titanic.

Were they just now grown to better understand what might have been going on a mile beneath the surface at the BP well head?

While many people living in the Gulf Are area are certain there are lots of things still not being disclosed this story from the Titanic may actually reveal one of the most troubling of all.

Interesting find, not unusual to find new forms of life, they have found life in underwater volcano's that are active, who would think that anything could live in that environment.

There are more then likely billions of life forms out there that we haven't discovered yet, also billions that go to extinct.

I find this particuarly intriquing because in part the potential damage this bacteria could do to oil platforms in the ocean, and in part because of the timing of the timing of them regrowing these bacteria that evidently they discovered in some form 19 years ago, and thought nothing of at the time.

When you consider the article clearly states that oil platforms may be at risk to these bacteria and then what was witnessed in some of the videos of the Deep Water Horizon Well, I think this may potentially be another dimension to the Deepwater story that they may not want to draw a direct line through to this experiment and study, but may have a very direct connection.

they need to find something that feeds off of this bacteria, or prevents it from reproducing to stave off potential attacks on the oil rig structures. I believe they need to start decomissioning Oil Rigs on a Global Scale, so that we can prevent anymore spills from happening to our fragile planet.

Humans need to wake up, and demand that this plan be put into action.

I personally think it just goes to show how mother nature eventually reclaims and reincorporates everything sooner or later.

It seems to be the only things that really survive the test of time, that are man made anyway, or the things man has made out of stone.

I think one of the areas we err in, is that the planet itself might be a lifeform, an intelligent one, that adapts to this end of reincorporated back into it, the things that are taken out of it.

Don't take my word for it. But I read in an archaeology book something about how the Titanic was carrying an Egyptian mummy aboard. And the mummy was cursed so that's how the Titanic sunk. BUT here's something you may not know about. Ancient cultures, particularly the ancient Egyptians, were highly skilled in germ & chemical warfare. How do you think people die after handling mummies in Egypt? NOT because of some mystical/magical curse. But because of exposure to poisons that were left behind by priests in the tombs before they were sealed shut. There was speculation over King Tutankhamen's tomb being laced w/ uranium dust. So when Lord Carnavan and his crew died? They didn't die of a magical curse. They simply died of radiation exposure. I heard that traces of uranium can be found in the same place where gold deposits are found. And how much gold did ancient Egypt have? A lot, right? So therefore maybe this metal-eating microbe may have came from an Egyptian tomb? Just saying.
