I think..

If you flag it : You like this topic, and you flag it so others will see it under "newly flaged"

If you star one : You agree with what this person write

To clarify further;
Flags are attached to threads, so you don't get flags unless you start threads.
Stars are attached to individual posts, so you can get stars for what you write on other people's threads.

Flags are given if you find the Thread in general interesting.
Stars are given in agreement or approval of what a particular poster puts as his/her/it's comment.

Flagging a thread generally means you are interested in the thread topic...it is well presented, adds something new to the subject at hand.

a star means the post is well written..and even if you don't agree with it, it adds positively to the conversation at hand to encourage further discussion...its, in my opinion, not who you agree with all the time, stars are not popularity contest points...its contribution points so to speak.

however, people often do use it often to star people that agree with them, even if the post adds little to the convo...missing the point.

See...thats the problem...people think stars are popularity contests.
in a place where the exchange of different ideas is paramount...its almost a disservice to reward only those whom agree with you and ignore those that don't but give a eloquent answer.

Being in agreement doesn't mean I'm voting "popular", it just means I'm in agreement with that person on this particular topic. There are several people who irk the hell out of me on some threads in how ignorant they come across, and on others they make decent points that make sense. I never vote for someone for the sake of liking what they've said in the past. If someone says something that isn't based on any kind of evidence, I don't care how well it was thought out and how perfectly it was written, they aren't getting a star. If a comment goes against my original idea but sways me a bit that's different, but I can't hand a star over to the guy that believes the world is 10,000 years old because the world's oldest living tree is 10,000 years old.

It just sounds to me like you're giving trophies to all the kids just for playing ball.
