Seoul, South Korea (CNN) -- North Korea on Tuesday fired artillery into the sea near its tense western sea border with South Korea, injuring at least four South Korean soldiers and two civilians, the Yonhap news agency reported. At least 200 rounds of artillery hit an inhabited South Korean island after the North started firing about 2:30 p.m. local time, Yonhap said. South Korea's military responded with 80 rounds of artillery and deployed fighter jets to counter the fire, the report said. The South Korean army also raised its alert condition, the report said. Images of plumes of smoke were quickly broadcast on Yonhap television from the island of Yeonpyeong, but it was not immediately clear what the artillery had hit. The island that was hit has a total of about 1,300 residents, a fisherman who lives on the island told Yonhap. The South Korean government immediately called an emergency meeting of its security ministers.

Kim Jong-il's son needs something to solidify his power center when he takes his father's place as the leader of N.K. This escalation looks like a tour de force to do just that on N.K.'s part.

Perhaps, with N.K.'s failing economy, they figure war is the only way for them to dig their way out of the hole. Then, again, maybe this is more the North's usual thumb-nosing and saber-rattling to see what everyone else will do. Could be a plan to further destabilize America by dragging them into yet another war given we have troops stationed there. I can only speculate on how China will react to all of this.

Who knows what will happen? We'll just have to wait and see.

What is scary is the fact that this man actually has nuclear weapons, one man in desperation can throw the bomb and kill millions....

Here we go! Can anyone think what Obama will do now that a real threat is about to gain momentum. This will not go without a response from the western powers. Does the world really see the next WORLD WAR not happening! This is going to get very ugly fast> Just my thought.

Seeing as this is U.S. political madness, I'll focus on this from the standpoint of the U.S.

The entire concept of North Korea triggering another world war is pretty silly. The only thing to fear from North Korea is their hideous amounts of infantry that they could not clothe or feed - let alone arm. It's doubtful they've kept their nuclear weapons in operating condition, as well.

The entire philosophy of the North has been to appeal to their own naive population in terms of the country's power and capability. North Koreans are taught from an early age that the rest of the world sucks and is jealous of Korea - the reason the rest of the world doesn't invade is due to their fear of Korea's military and the greatness of their Leader.

Exactly how many believe that through adulthood is unknown.

Anyway - South Korea and the U.S. have a very close military and economic relationship. The goal of joint exercises since at least 2008 has been to shift primary control and responsibility of the ROK's defense over to Korea, with U.S. forces falling under Korea. The U.S. will possibly increase their presence in the area, but our role in Korea's defense is becoming an advisory and support role with the authority to save-the-day if necessary.

Korea also sees this as a family affair. The North sees the South as their brothers and sisters that have been corrupted by evil forces. The South sees the North almost the exact same way, and would not appreciate the U.S. taking preemptive actions against North Korea without being invited to do so by the South.
