The European Union on Tuesday announced plans for a five-year ban on animal cloning for food production as well as a traceability system for imports of semen and embryos of clones.

"Cloning for food is not required" across the EU, European health commissioner John Dalli told a news conference. "There's no need for it."

Still allowing it for other commercial/conservation reasons.

Not sure how I feel about this. Honestly hadn't realised it was an issue - I'd assumed that cloning was cost prohibitive compared to just letting your bull/rooster/ram loose and letting nature run it's course.

Obviously, my initial thoughts are that I'd rather have my meat 'made' the old fashioned way, but at the end of the day, we really haven't got much of an idea or control over what it's been fed/drugged with or how healthy a stock it's from.
