The United States top intelligence official says President Barack Obama is upset by the spate of recent leaks of classified intelligence operations.

"Yesterday, I was ashamed to have to sit there and listen to the President express his great angst about the leaking in this town," the American magazine The Atlantic quoted Director of National Intelligence James Clapper as saying on Wednesday. Speaking after a speech on domestic intelligence at the Bipartisan Policy Center's conclave in Washington, Clapper said he could not understand the idea of "widely quoted amorphous and anonymous senior intelligence officials who get their jollies from blabbing to the media .... people who are allegedly government officials in responsible positions who have supposedly taken an oath."

"The irony here is people engaged in intelligence who turn around and talk about it publicly," he added. Clapper went on to say that the disclosure of war-related classified documents by the whistleblower website WikiLeaks presents a "big yellow flag" and will have a "chilling effect" on the need of the intelligence community to share information. On July 23, the website published around 77,000 classified US military files and has pledged to release another 15,000 related documents soon.

The files, dubbed as the "Afghan War Diary," disclosed that the White House has covered up the deaths of countless innocent Afghan civilians who were murdered by the US-led troops. US officials have called the leak one of the biggest security breaches in the country's military history.
