The U.S. government has dismissed claims by al-Qaeda's No. 2 leader Ayman al-Zawahiri that the West is in retreat and the terror outfit is in ascendance after nine years of fighting.
Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs Philip J. Crowley said that Washington's relations with "countries in the (militancy-infected) regions around the world are in ascendance and it is al-Qaeda - and particularly the core al-Qaeda - that is in retreat."

I find it so damn hard to believe either side, all a bunch of idiots pretending. They work for the same purpose.

Obama is right when he says 'Osama is somewhere inside a deep whole'...that's probably because the only thing left of him are his remains.

This announcement is correct. 2010 has been an especially quiet year for al-Qaeda, showing a continual decline of their media presence and their physical capabilities especially. The main factors to take into account are UCAV strikes in Pakistan, which have resulted in the deaths of many senior al-Qaeda members. You have hackers constantly sabotaging As-Sahab's media efforts and intelligence guys listening out for any sort of traceable activity involving what little remains of the al-Qaeda leadership.

Then there are the floods in Pakistan which didn't help matters. Despite being a potential haven for recruiters they simply don't have the physical capabilities to truly take advantage of the situation, indeed they were screwed by the floods as much as anyone.

Some have suggested that this is a period of radio-silence leading up to an attack, but this is unlikely and would not correlate to previous attacks. You can expect to see a lot of propaganda posturing from As-Sahab and al-Qaeda in the near future to try and paint a rosier picture of their situation, but it is safe to assume that what we are seeing here is the slow death of al-Qaeda.

This is just psy-ops by both sides. You can't believe either one. Average joe is not going to be told what is really going on. If Al-q has been laying low for a year. There probably regrouping and planning something big.

Yes of course it is propaganda coming from both sides, only the most pointless of announcements could not be branded as propaganda and propaganda does not necessarily equate to lies. As you would expect with two sides making opposing announcements, one side has a weight of truth behind it.

Agreed. But I really doubt al-q is on the slow march to death. Like any major long term military operation. I think this is just a regroup resupply on there part. There lives are undoubtly harder now so they have to be even more secretive like you said. I think its a little to early to speculate that they are starting to fall apart though.

I'm sure the Soviets dismissed Afghan militants claims before too and look what happened

And as far as I can see, it's becoming common knowledge in the West that it's nothing more than a farce that has left them with the blood of hundreds of thousands of dead Afghans/Iraqis. The only people really claiming victory here happens to be the government and the few stupid people who still believe them.

I think Al-Zawahiri was right.

Don't forget that Al-Zawahiri is from Egypt, and don't forget his history because it really puts perspective to the Al-Qaeda situation.

The US is in retreat. It is collapsing, you can see the empire falling as people rise against its puppet mayors, for example Mubarak.

French Empire is also in trouble, as you can see Tunisia which kicked the French puppet mayor Ali.
