Memorizing Buddhist Mahayana Sutras.

If one was to take on the task of memorizing some of the Mahayana Buddhist Sutras does it have to be in Sanskrit or can you memorize an English translation and still get the spiritual benefits from it?

I have no idea.

But now that you have brought this up, I am very curious indeed as to the answer.

Hopefully someone will know. I think the intent is all that is required but again, I am not sure.

I know the Heart Sutra can be memorized in Chinese, Japanese, or Tibetan. So I don't see why that one couldn't be memorized in English. Though the Mantra at the end would have to be Sanskrit but Mantras are easy to memorize, just not blocks of text in a language one doesn't speak.
