We have been led to believe for so long that the news is the truth of what is going on in the world; This is not accurate. The media skews stories to either cover up the real truth, or sensationalize the truth to exploit a part of the story (race, country, etc...). I remember when Pravda was always known as the voice of the former Soviet Union. The folks received the news the government wanted them to hear. Looks like we have our own Pravda's in this country, and it's our mainstream media; Lucky for us we have the alternative news sites.

Excellent topic. The MSM in the U.S. has succeeded in making themselves irrelevant and that's why readership and viewership have fallen and we all have sought news elsewhere.

Wow. S&F

My favorite bit from your link:

… Do we have a free press today? Sure. It’s free to report all the sex scandals, all the stock market news, [and] every new health fad that comes down the pike. But when it comes to the real down and dirty stuff – such stories are not even open for discussion.

the good news is that things will change soon though...

within two years, iceland will have in place the new 'modern media initiative' law which will allow reporters and whistle-blowers to report the news they want without fear of being sacked, sued or persecuted. if all goes well, it should revolutionise the way news has been presented for a VERY long time, as this story's quote from here shows....

John Swinton, the foremost journalist of his day, was asked to toast an independent press at a New York banquet given in his honour by other journalists. His response was clear and forthright:

“There is no such thing, at this stage of the world’s history in America, as an independent press. You know it and I know it. There is not one of you who dare write your honest opinions, and if you did, you know beforehand that it would never appear in print. I am paid weekly for keeping my honest opinions out of the paper I am connected with. Other of you are paid similar salaries for similar things, and any of you who would be foolish as to write honest opinions would be out on the streets looking for another job. If I allowed my honest opinions to appear in one issue of my papers, before twenty-four hours my occupation would be gone.

“The business of the journalist is to destroy the truth, to lie outright, to pervert, to vilify, to fawn at the feet of mammon, and to sell his country and his race for his daily bread. You know it and I know it, and what folly is this toasting an independent press? We are the jumping jacks, they pull the strings and we dance. Our talents, our possibilities and our lives are all the property of other men.

“We are intellectual prostitutes.”
John Swinton, New York 1890.
