DUBAI, United Arab Emirates -- A British woman stripped down to her bikini and strutted defiantly through a swanky Dubai mall after an Emirati woman covered head-to-toe in black confronted her for wearing a low-cut shirt, police said Thursday...

On the one hand, there is a strict moral code that includes dress and public behavior. People are being punished for it.

But then you have places in Dubai, like the Cyclone club, that is strictly a prostitute club, with many women that are forced into the sex trade. But there are also just as many women that 'apparently' choose that lifestyle because of the big money involved.

I hope that I don't offend anyone (probably will) but shouldn't they keep everything completely seperate? If you are going to be moral to the point that you arrest people for kissing public, why not build a Reno, a place where brothels are completely legal? Or do they accept the fact that prositition is one of the oldest professions in the world, and since it will always be here, might as well keep it more or less centralized in known locations that are easily avoidable by the devout Muslims in their country, and completely off the streets?

How can both exist in the same place?

As you said, they keep the dens of iniquity out of the 'public' forum. I feel no pain for this woman who had no respect for the customs of a country not her own. I personally have great respect for women who dress as modestly as possible. It shows a maturity rarely found in western nations.

Will she be so willing to parade in her bikini at the jail I wonder?

I have no pity for this woman. Any logical person knows - if you visit a foreign country LEARN THE LAWS OF THE LAND and ABIDE BY THEM. Its very simple to do!

You dont like the laws there - then simply dont go if you cant follow them. Seems many idiot foreigners visiting this country continually break their laws and end up in jail.

I have posted this before...but my brother almost bought a house in Dubai. After reading the laws and extreme customs there - he decided he would not even visit because it just didnt jive with his way of life.

And I am also curious as to your second point about modest dress equaling maturity...what does that mean?

I can understand where in certain cultures, modest dress equals individual respect for the customs of that cutlure or religion. But how does modest dress on women equal their maturity level? Again, I am just curious, because I am not understanding this.

So if a female CEO of a major Western corporation wears a bikini, or a mother, or a poltical leader of a foreign country, she is not mature? Is that what you are saying?

It does not matter what their laws are or their customs or the hypocrisy they may have. What matters is - you chose to visit their country, you better follow their laws to a "T" or you will find yourself behind bars.

Their country. Their laws and customs. It does not matter if WE think they are right or wrong. We have no say in it. We just have to abide by them if we visit.

But I do not get how strictly moral this country is on the one hand, and then ignores this issue on the other.

Try stripping down to a bikini and walking through you local shoppin centre in England...I doubt you manage to stay there for long before being forced to leave or having the police called to move you along...

Why such a shock that in a country where modesty is even more important...it would still not be allowed.

She wasn't on a beach here people...she was in a shopping centre, bikinies arn't shopping centre clothes. (even if I wish they were )

I would have to say, this british woman has more balls than i do!
That takes a lot of courage to do something like that, knowing that parts of the muslim world are 100x more stricter than the western world.

I do believe everyone has the right to behave as they see fit. But i also believe large groups of like minded people have the right to live in places where they see their moral standards upheld

Do you have no pity for the young Afghan women who had her nose cut off or the saudi princess who was beheaded for adultery or the saudi girls who burned to death so the religious police could enforce the law? How about black men who have been lynched and burned for violating the laws against whites and blacks together?

I get that point.

When I was stationed in Saudi in the 90's, I had to learn the customs that were acceptable, because my job was in logistics, I had to go into the city all of the time. I respected thier culture 100%, long sleeve shirts, not using my left hand for much, and a number of greetings in their language.

Maybe that is my point here. I do not understand how two different Muslim regions could be so different from each other. Riyadh and Dubai both follow the same moral code, right? I do not remember ever hearing about anything even remotely related to adultery while there.

Why is Dubai two-faced?

I think regardless of the morality or justification of such laws, she should not have done what she did. As another poster said above, when you go to a foreign country then (for good or for bad) you should abide by their laws else expect to get banged up. If you can't do this as you disagree with said laws, don't go there and if you really want to make a point then do it by some other means. Just don't expect to break the laws and expect anything other than being arrested for it.

I've been to Dubai 15 years ago before all the mega-construction and I found it to be a nice place. If you rule out bad behavior like this woman did, getting those folks off the street, the reasonable people who want to get along can have a nice life.

Maybe your brother should at least visit Dubai and have a look before deciding. Houses are probably a bargain now with the overbuilding, and he might well like the people too. I did.

Every country is this way. Even America. Legally: you can meet a chic online, take her out to dinner and sleep with her that night. Illegal: you can not make a phone call to an escort agency to meet a girl, take her to dinner and sleep with her.

Every country is rampit with ridiculous laws and hypocrisy.

It's a country where slavery exists - the form of slavery makes it LOOK voluntary but it's not -t hat place is filled with extreme poverty.

It's a nasty, nasty place.

She's got some cojones and I just hope they don't stone her or something for having them - but more women need to shake that place up.

I'm not sure if I agree with her stripping down to her bikini . I was hoping to have pictures provided to help me decide.

I guarantee that if you stripped down to a bikini in a mall in most western countries, you would be stopped by security. If you refused to clothe yourself or leave, the cops would be talking to you. No different than Dubai.
