My understanding is that initially the video on the blog only contained the 'didn't help him as much as I could have' bit. This was what went viral and it wasn't until much later that the full video appeared.

I don't agree with the "gatekeeper" idea; however, I fully support the right to sue someone for defamation, slanderous and libel remarks made on the internet.

Despite it's heinous source
here's the best timeline (maybe only comprehensive timeline) of the incident I've seen.

Timeline of Breitbart's Sherrod smear

You might find it useful as a starting point.

U.S. Authorities Shut Down WordPress Host With 73,000 Blogs
Written by enigmax on July 16, 2010
torrentfreak.com...

After the U.S. Government took action against several sites connected to movie streaming recently, nerves are jangling over the possibility that this is just the beginning of a wider crackdown. Now it appears that a free blogging platform has been taken down by its hosting provider on orders from the U.S. authorities on grounds of “a history of abuse”. More than 73,000 blogs are out of action as a result.

Hot on the heels of recent threats from Vice President Joe Biden and Intellectual Property Enforcement Coordinator Victoria Espinel directed at sites offering unauthorized movies and music, last month U.S. authorities targeted several sites they claimed were connected to the streaming of infringing video material.

"Operation In Our Sites" targeted several sites including TVShack.net, Movies-Links.TV, FilesPump.com, Now-Movies.com, PlanetMoviez.com, ThePirateCity.org, ZML.com, NinjaVideo.net and NinjaThis.net. In almost unprecedented action, the domain names of 7 sites were seized and indications are that others – The Pirate Bay and MegaUpload – narrowly avoided the same fate.

Fears remain, however, that this action is only the beginning, and that more sites will be targeted as the months roll on. Indeed, TorrentFreak has already received information that other sites, so far unnamed in the media, are being monitored by the authorities on copyright grounds.

Now, according to the owner of a free WordPress platform which hosts more than 73,000 blogs, his network of sites has been completely shut down on the orders of the authorities.

Blogetery.com has been with host BurstNet for 7 months but on Friday July 9th the site disappeared. The following Monday the owner received an email from BurstNet:

Quote:
Due to the history of abuse and on going abuse on this ‘bn.***********’ server.

We have opted to terminate this server, effective immediately. This termination applies to: bn.affiliateplex.com

Abuse Department
BurstNET Technologies, Inc

Further correspondence received the following response:
Quote:
Bn.xx*********** was terminated by request of law enforcement officials, due to material hosted on the server.

We are limited as to the details we can provide to you, but note that this was a critical matter and the only available option to us was to immediately deactivate the server.

…and a later clarification:
Quote:
Please note that this was not a typical case, in which suspension and notification would be the norm. This was a critical matter brought to our attention by law enforcement officials. We had to immediately remove the server.

“We notified him [the Blogetery owner] when we terminated it [the server], and we refunded him his money to his account, because he has other servers with us If he wants the refund to his card, we can easily do that. However, it should be the least of his concerns,” A BurstNet representative later confirmed.

“Simply put: We cannot give him his data nor can we provide any other details. By stating this, most would recognize that something serious is afoot.”

Due to the fact that the authorities aren’t sharing information and BurstNet are sworn to secrecy, it is proving almost impossible to confirm the exact reason why Blogetery has been completely taken down. The owner does, however, admit to handling many copyright-related cease and desists in the past, albeit in a timely manner as the DMCA requires.

Nevertheless, a couple of quick Google searches which are likely to turn up blogs which link to copyright material appear to do just that – here, here and here. That said, on any network this large this type of activity is bound to happen. Many thousands of blogs on the same platform would have been perfectly legal.

ANDREW KEEN "What i think it reflects is a certain sort of paranoia about a media an obsession with conspiracy uh a kind of loonicy that reflects to us a an extremism a bitterness." If these CNN reportes hates free Internet why do these steal so many story from Youtube and alternative News sites? Seems every week there are make old news talking about stuff online. I guess arm chair reporters are the new field journalists.

If that video wasnt a pure propaganda piece, I dont know what is.

"Here in this nation, with our free press, we dont need freedom of speech. The press can handle all reporting. We dont need user generated content and it should be limited."

Utter rubbish. I agree with those who said existing laws will cover this. It was irresponsible media coverage that helped lead to her firing, not just the blog. And what is all this,

"We just dont have time to verify all these details, therefore, they should not be allowed to be posted."

There sure is a big move towards limiting the internet lately. Lots of small incremental moves and propaganda in that direction to pave the way. Either they are scared over what Wikileaks has, or just in general all the information sharing is hurting their credibility.

Wait for it, terrorists using the internet to do "blah blah blah" and stuff being shut down. They are so close to grabbing for power they dont want a democratic surge to impeded them now.

Freedom is in real danger. America and her Constitution are in real danger.

They said the 73,000 site blog site was shut down due to terrorist activity with bomb-making instructions, and that the site owner made the decision to shut it all down rather than just the specific blogs.

It okay mate, this person and others overlook the other thread related to the story but would rather talk about those that go against the Kool-Aid agenda of this white house.

As far as Breitbart, he is on record at CNN stating that his stance on the tape was to show NAACP ignorance. CNN and their cohorts ran with the story to defame Sherod when Beck supported her for context.

Yet this person you quote is willing to overlook all of those facts only to pander on about quoting some article which never witnessed the entire events take place that day.

The power of the internet has become so strong that the powers that be are at wits end with opposing information that threatens their position.

Of late there are numerous stories in mainstream media "demonizing" the internet with stories of cyber bullying and child porn and a million other reasons why the internet should be filtered.

It's all part of the grand plan to gain public approval to give the government free reign on what they feel should be censored.

If some one is cyber bullied or in a producer of child porn then by all means charge them and charge them with a penalty that will deter other would be offenders, but don't use it as an excuse to further control the masses through blanket censorship.

If you've never thought of becoming a blogger then here are a few reasons why you should.

1.) Blogging is actually easy and it's a great hobby to collect stories in one place and share view points ..... most people here on ATS are familiar with political agenda so do your part to name and shame these people!

2.) It's real easy to set up and the easiest is blogger.com and it has some great new customization features ...... or if you're more tech inclined you could get a domain / hosting and set up a wordpress blog. I personally like Blogger as they are owned by google and your stories get up the google ranks quite quickly.

3.) Even if you're to lazy to write a story but you've found an awesome story that you would like to share you can "cut & past" into your blog and provide a link to the original source .... it's called syndicated news everyone does it.

4.) Blogging gives the people a voice .... blogging allows you to fight back.

5.) If you become good at blogging you can make an income from your efforts , through advertising or sales.

6.) Your Blog is your sword it's your ability to fight back, expose lies and demand the truth.

Yes they assassinated that Greek Blogger and that's bad BUT it just goes to show how influential one man can be with a PC and a well established blog.

Find stories that the MSM won't dare to publish and spread them like wild fire "cut paste link blog" get the word out in google and other search engines.

Knowledge Is Power Let Your Blog Be Your Sword!

There should be a "crackdown" on "journalists" who find crap on the internet and make it broadcast news before doing their own research on the subject.

It's funny when you realize how completely gullible news agencies and networks really are.

Im sure every site they shut down will have allegedly contained "terrorist" links and other scary things.

They are only oppressing us for our own good, why dont we understand that?

The playwright Euripides (480 -406 BC) defended the true liberty of freeborn men; the right to speak freely, and he added diplomatically: "Who neither can nor will may hold his peace. What can be more just in a State than this?".
The right to the freedom of speech, is always under the threat of being curved and taken away in this day and age, as it ever has been since the writing of the constitution that governs the laws of the land. The freedom of speech is the very corner stone to help protect the very rights and liberties that every one in this country. That right has been protected time and time again in the courts, with the rules of the freedom of speech has always been that you can say just about anything at anytime to anyone who will choose to listen. Where you can not say scream fire in a crowded theater, a person may at any time say anything that they so choose. With the modern day idea of being policitally correct, once again the freedom of speech is under attack by different groups.
But the freedom of speech also has a second right, which is you can choose not to listen and ignore what is being spoken. Many times people fail to do just that and the problems begin.
Now when the government starts to shut down blogs, or say you can not say something, then there is another issue that is coming up here, and that is censorship. And whether the CNN host who suggested the crackdown on bloggers realizes it or not, that is what it is tantamount to, an act of censorship against the citizens of the country. Shut down the blogs and it opens the door for the government or any official to start to determine what the public can and can not read, view, or even listen to, and that would be more harmful to society on a whole.

When I read this thing about CNN, I right away thought of the talks that Cory Doctorow gives. Many of his comments are along the lines of:

"Who wakes up in the morning and says that they want to do less with their media?"

I know he is talking about ebooks and music and other media crippled by DRM. But this is essentially what media folks like the ones at CNN are purposing when they say they want to control the flow of information.

They want to take technology intended to increase information and accessibility, and then dumb it down. And they want less information ... which doesn't necessarily mean better information.
