It's best to simply come up with a more intelligent expression instead of resorting to profanity.

Who decided swearing was unintelligent?

Are people still offended by swear words? If so why?

Seems a pretty strong opinion given that you've been here less than a month.

Needless to say, I disagree - I've never had this problem, and the only people I know who have, are those who have some kind of grudge.

I've seen dozens of posts similar to yours over the past few years, and IMO they are all wide of the mark.

By quite some distance.

best thing to do if you think you are being unfairly treated, is use the complaints function, or bring it up in the "issues" thread.

Since you know so much you will also know i've been following threads for years.

Did you like my profile picture?

I must admit, i am probably guilty of swearing on this site more than many. Apologies to those that i offend, the words just come out sometimes when i'm fired up about a subject. I never use them in an abusive context or directed at other members. I guess it's just a cultural difference, in Australia we can say the F word on prime-time mainstream TV and not get censored... *shrug* ..but y'know, when in Rome and all that.. i'll try to behave

I got censored, warned and a points penalty for this one time:

Delta
India
Charlie
*ilo

The asterisk should be replaced with this letter: K....

Now I posted it without the 'K' to avoid any problems .

Let it be known that the poster I was responding to was baiting people, and that member was recently banned.

My question is, did my original post actually violate T&C as they are written?

ETA: I just had some memory return to me, I may have actually added the following after Kilo:

Hotel
Echo
Alpha
Delta

I am not completely sure now, but it would have fit.

Again , I am not complaining or whining about any penalties I incurred .
I am trying to get a satisfactory answer to my query .

As already stated by others as well as myself , I UNDERSTAND mods can't be everywhere and see everything .

BUT , how do NINE mods miss something on the FRONT PAGE of a thread ?
Something that is , in my opinion , much more profane than a 4-letter word ?

And NO , it is NOT irrelevant that I was "actioned" and someone else was not . Rules are rules , they apply to everyone . And yes , it is the responsibility of the mods to see that those rules are adhered to and enforced . So , it is not irrelevant when it is clear that mods are doing their job in one thread , while mods in another are not .

Who decides what is profane or obscene ? Does ATS have a list of what is acceptable and what is not ? Or , is it left up to the discretion of the mods as to what stays and what goes ?

Take the following words and arrange them as you wish , and then tell me that the statement does not fall under obscene or profane . And remember , this is on the front page of a thread , with nine mods .

big , so , a , penis , fit , it , rectum , in , his .

This has been up since 6/30 , on the front page , and still , no mods have had time to review this thread or , if they have , did not find it warranted any action ?

Maybe it's just me ? Maybe the above is nowhere near as bad as a 4-letter word that employed * for three of those letters ?

As stated , I am not complaining , I just feel there is a need to address this issue concerning the application of censors , penalties etc .

While I have utilized the ALERT function a few times , I don't feel it should be the responsibility of posters to POLICE fellow posters .

The issue of citizens policing their fellow citizens has been discussed here on more than one occassion , and the concensus is that , NONE of us agree with it .

Is this not what TPTB do ? They want us to all snitch on each other , and report any of our neighbors that are different ?

Because they 'can't be everywhere at once' , they encourage all of us to use the 'alert' function ?

Are we becoming that which we despise ?

I find it inexcusable that nine mods would not notice obscenity on the very first page of a thread . I'm not buying that .

The T&C apply to everyone .

P.S. THIS IS NOT a Free Speech site.

You have free speech inside of the T&C which you've agreed to.

Boy, you're going to have to show me this moderator bias because I work here and we don't agree on much, aside from the T&C. We have people from around the political spectrum. Same with religion and other topics.

P.P.S. This site allows insults only if you insult people the mods don't like.

That is not only untrue but childish.

And how did you determine there were 9 mods on at the time? The Home Page? That lists people that have been on in the last hour. Maybe there was 9 but I doubt it. Secondly, there are forums I seldom go into because I don't care for the subject. I'm sure other have their forums they don't care for as well. OK, let's look at the numbers:

posts/24hr:5630

That's 200 posts/hour. We're supposed to keep up with that? Uh-huh. You may not be "buying" it but that's what I'm selling and you won't get any satisfaction until you see that.

This has absolutely nothing to do with what forums one likes or dislikes . When nine mods are moderating one forum , you are going to tell me that none of those nine reviewed the thread in six days now ?

Why ? Because none of the nine likes the forum the thread is in , so none of the nine have bothered to look at the thread ?

Maybe I am missing something here , what exactly , is a mod required to do ?

I think the mods should be replaced by automated bots. I guess this may sound slightly extreme, but its a good way to get used to being monitored in the real world.

hehe..

Nah...i like it when mods or admins do mistakes, its shows that there is truly a human being in charge who can and will do mistakes without it being a pattern. Then again, down at Virginia no such mistakes are tolerated.

Btw. Keep up the good work mods.

OK, that's how you determined that. Well to start with. It's vacation season. Holidays this week in the US and Canada. This is a voluntary job. No remuneration. That means life comes first. The board second. The only thing we get is the occasional thank you and almost daily crap. You're welcome.

Only thing that I can suggest is that you use the "alert" button if you think that there is a problem. The odds are good that there will be at least one Mod who will understand/agree with whatever it is that you submitted.

I've seen a lot of uneven enforcement with things like using *** in place of letters of a curse word, but it was never anything that bothered me. I figured, if anything, Mods had bigger fish to fry than the ***. To tell you the truth, if I was a Mod, the *** would be one of the last things I looked for, but that's just me.

And you would be right. We all have our own aptitudes when it come to the board. Some are better at something, others not. For example if someone is asking a tech question I probably won't even check it out because I'm a tech dinosaur. I could give advice. Probably make things worse.

Sooooo, I'm still confused. Swearing, not okay. I get that.
Circumventing the sensors, not okay. I get that too.
Abbreviations, okay?

Examples:
WTF
FOAD
POS/SPOS

I have seen all recently used in threads which have mod. activity.
It appears I am destined to remain confuzzled...

Wouldn't be the first time.

No, indeed it wouldn't be - nor the 2nd or 3rd time...but where's the fun in being coherent? Especially when the site you occupy is a mixture of all of the above.

Good that I don't have a care about the consistency of some things, one way or the other, no?
Lol.

Not worth sweating the small stuff, it's much more entertaining (and telling) to watch
and read how members choose to represent.

I will ask again.....

Does this violate T&C as they are written?

India

Since you are indirectly calling another member a ****head, i would suggest that yes it does. T&C includes abusing other members, regardless of swearing.

Thank you for your answer.

You are right.

I do see that sometimes people get away with thing, though.

I suppose that it is a matter of policing our own ranks. Calling in a mod when there are problems.
