Poland welcomes US soldiers, Patriot missiles

Polish and U.S. officials hailed the arrival in Poland of an American Patriot missile battery, saying Wednesday that the hardware and soldiers close to the Russian border enhance Polish security but pose no threat to Russia.

The Patriot battery arrived Sunday at a base in Morag, a town in northeastern Poland 37 miles (60 kilometers) from Russia's westernmost point, the Kaliningrad exclave.

Why?

Do we really think that the Russians are stupid enough to start lobbing missiles over the border into Poland?

To the extent that they need these and I can't imagine why they would, why can't they be provided via NATO or simply sold to the Pols and let them man the batterys?

This is nothing but an act of provocation towards the Russians. Now, lets get this straight. We are working hard on the Russians to assist with sanctions against Iran and that does not seem to be working all that well. In order to facilitate their cooperation we stick missiles on their border.

A waste of money, a waste of resources, fighting the last war, a method to erode ties with an important country. On so many levels this makes no sense and is another thread in the disjointed foreign policy of the US.

This is not an Obama thing, although he necessarily gets the blame as it is happening on his watch. Bush did the same kind of foolishness when he was at the helm.

If the Russians decide to make a move on Poland, they are going to make a move on Poland and Patriot missiles are not going to stop them.
