Russia will begin tests of its new state-of-the-art multi-purpose nuclear submarine Yasen, Project 855 in 2010

The unique submarine qualitatively differs from all of its predecessors. Moreover, Yasen will become the first submarine, which was entirely built in Russia during the post-Soviet period, Oleg Burtsev, a senior spokesman for the command of the Russian Navy said. The new submarine is to be launched in the beginning of May. JSC Sevmash, the company that builds all Russian submarines, is currently busy with making preparations to the landmark moment.
The submarine was named Severodvinsk. Engineers of the company said that it would be quieter and much more powerful than the USA’s Sea Wolf.

Severodvinsk is a twin-hull nuclear submarine with decreased level of acoustic field. The submarine has ten compartments. The cruiser carries an extraordinarily strong complex of arms capable of solving combat tasks with practically any type of modern surface vessels and submarines. For the first time in the history of domestic ship-building, torpedo-launching systems are located behind the compartment of the central station. The new sonar complex Irtysh was installed in the fore end of the sub. Severodvinsk has eight vertical missile-launching systems: each of the systems houses three missiles.

The story continue on about a lot of new features of this puppy. Sounds like the Russian Navy is bringing it's A Game. I would love to hear any old sub guys review of this one. Thanks in advance.

Looks like the Russian's are updating alot of equipment, just like the PAK-Fa. I wonder how our navy is going to deal with this new sub.

They mention the OLDER US Sea Wolf class. Due to retire IMHO They are reacting to the new Virginia class subs being built.

The Virginia class

The Virginia class (or SSN-774 class) of attack submarines are U.S. submarines designed for a broad spectrum of open-ocean and littoral missions. They were designed as a less expensive alternative to the Cold War era designed Seawolf-class attack submarines, and they are slated to replace the aging Los Angeles class submarines, seventeen of which (from a total of 62) have already been decommissioned.

The Virginia-class incorporates several innovations not previously seen in other submarine classes. Instead of a traditional periscope, the class utilizes a pair of telescoping photonics masts[2] located outside the pressure hull. Each mast contains high-resolution cameras, along with light-intensification and infrared sensors, an infrared laser rangefinder, and an integrated Electronic Support Measures (ESM) array. Signals from the masts' sensors are transmitted through fiber optic data lines through signal processors to the control center. Visual feeds from the masts are displayed on LCD interfaces in the command center. The class also makes use of pump-jet propulsors, which significantly reduces the risks of cavitation, allowing for quieter operations.

USS California will be the first Virginia with the advanced electromagnetic signature reduction system built in, but this will be refitted into the other submarines of the class

Wow on both upcoming Yassen and Virginia class subs. The silent wars just got more interesting.

I wonder if India will be able to lease some Yassen-class subs from Russia, like they did with 2 new Akula-class subs.

Question: Does US sell any subs to their allies, like Taiwan?
