IRGC (Iran) Stops Italian, French Ships In PG (Gulf)

The Islamic Revolution Guard Corps' naval patrol units have stopped an Italian and a French vessel in the Strait of Hormuz and inspected them.

The two vessels were inspected by the IRGC forces during a military maneuver on Friday for verification that they complied with environmental regulations.

The vessels were allowed to continue sailing after confirmation that they had not breached any regulations, the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported.

Iranian "drills" are really raising tensions in Hormuz these days. I dont know what is Irans legal right to stop international vessels in Hormuz, but at the time of large war drills when we see military vessels stoping NATO allies merchant vessels gives us a very scary picture from what is happening there - and how easy those actions can escalate because of some misunderstandings, or some triggerhappy NATO captain.

This is clear showing of Irans muscles - if NATO is about to start wider blockade around Iran, I think they will do the same and vessels will be stoped, and maybe taken to their custody because of easy claims that those vessels do not have some right papers, or those wont fulfill some "enviromental regulations" ... You see?

If IRGC starts to stop now western vessels in Hormuz, what I havent heard happening before - we are not far that those vessels will be escorted with NATO warships - and what then?

This news doesnt look good...

Incidents like that of the S.S Sussex have had a huge impact in kicking start war, progressing war, isolating nations from the international community.

Having the IRGC board/inspect merchant vessels could open the door for an incident (false flag or otherwise) to isolate Iran further, especially in the straights..

Now if we look at Ahmedinejad's statements in the recent past, he seems to be very confident about Iran's security in the near and long term future. Some people say that such rhetoric is meant for the domestic audience. Others say that Iran has capable proxies like Hamas, Hezbollah and Syria to confront Israel. Iran's own influence in Iraq is also said to be responsible for this confidence.
