The police can take your property and auction it off or sell it ; if it is suspected of being involved in a crime scene. The " Civil Asset Forfeiture '" where your personal property is assumed guilty and it is up to you to prove otherwise , (no matter if you were involved in the crime or not ) to get your property back. I can see how this could be a big money maker. People that don't have the time or money to contest the ' forfeiture ' will most always loose .

in Australia we have a law called "Proceeds of Crime". Basically they can take assets if they think it might be from crime. Of course you then have to prove it wasn't. Also if they seize all your assets you have no money to pay for a solicitor. Also if you sell your story to a paper or in a book, this also is considered a proceed from cime & seize that money as well, leaving you with nothing to pay to fight it in court.
