Iraq Thwarted 9/11-Style Plot, Officials Claim

www.cbsnews.com

Iraqi security forces disrupted a 9/11-style plot by al Qaeda in Iraq to fly hijacked planes into Shiite religious shrines, Iraqi and U.S. officials said Wednesday.

Iraqi security officials said they temporarily shut down at least two airports and have arrested two men - one of the intended pilots and an airport worker - suspected in the plot, which appeared aimed at undermining the country's stability while U.S. troops prepare to go home.

Hmmmmm. What do you think?

Sounds like a devastating plot if its true. The 2 Iraqi spokesmen spoke on condition of 'anonymity' and another one denied the whole thing!

If it is true and had been carried out it no doubt would of set off a Sunni-Shia civil war , beyond what we have seen before in 2006 in Iraq, and mabye even beyond Iraq's borders in to the wider region.

Obviously there is a Shia majority in the country and they now control the power levers in the country. Could this noe be used to clamp down on Sunni rights and lead to profiling as carried out during Sadame's era?

Could it be a false flag event, or a real Al-Qaeda inspired attempt to fuel a secterain war?

Gee...

Funny that Iraq, a destroyed country, can thwart an airline attack, but the mighty US got caught with their pants down.

Ha great point. However i would suggest the Iraqi security apparatus is much more honed to detecting this kind of thing than the U.S. was at the time of 9/11.

That is if you believe the official 9/11 story.

It looks like the attack came pretty close to being carried out.

Intel was able to gather info on the attack and move fast to prevent and arrest. Security forces were able to stop al-Qaida from hijacking a civilian aircraft that took off from Najaf airport. The plane was to head for Imam Ali shrine according to media reports.

The shrine. Quite beautiful.

Sounds like malarkey to me.

And of course it would be too much to ask them to prove it.
