Survey: Ron Paul even with Obama in hypothetical 2012 race

Rep. Ron Paul, the Texas Republican who struggled to crack 10% in presidential primary polls in 2008, runs dead even with President Obama in a new Rasmussen survey out today.

The survey of 1,000 likely voters in a hypothetical Obama-Paul race gave the Democratic president 42% and the veteran congressman 41%. Paul was particularly strong -- as you would expect -- among independents. He out polled Obama 47% to 28% among voters who are not affiliated with either major party.

2012 may be very exciting at the polls. Im noticing the MSM talking about Ron Paul very often as if he is a first draft pick for 2012 as of late. Back in 08 no one in MSM would dare mention his name.

Even though I'm totally behind Ron Paul and I would have rather he won than Obama -- I don't believe this Poll... Is this poll truly credible? Also, where did they sample?

I saw this on the Drudge Report when I looked at it earlier. So I would say that this is legitimate. Ron Paul has been hitting home with alot of people in America, with his constitutional conservatism. His end the Fed idea has also been gaining support. So hopefully in 2012 Ron Paul is elected and becomes the new Thomas Jefferson.

Even if Paul were President not much would change. Unless the government was flooded with libertarian types Paul would spend all of his time complaining about the things congress is doing and vetoing just about anything that hits his desk.

Absolutely nothing getting done in Washington would probably still be a million times better than the way it is now with those bastards just passing whatever they want and spending whatever they want on anything they want.

I long for a completely dead and blocked government. Even better would be one willing to cannibalize itself until it shrink back to the purpose it was intended to have.

This is untrue, Paul could simply continue what he is doing right now but as President. Which is continuously appear on TV educating the people.

As an honest president he would have perhaps little power, however he could empower the people. If 80-85% of the people were not stupid and were informed about corruption then perhaps something can happen.

It was always about "we the people" and it still is from both sides of the coin.

Paul is the last best chance for voting em out. Hard to say how much immediate impact, but if he keeps up the rhetoric maybe a drastic change could come about. It has to be a return to self empowerment everywhere at the grass roots level first. That means spending money in the community with small business. The speech has to be wholistic.

You know what really weirds me out? I'm a Democratic socialist but I pray not for a socialist president but for Ron Paul.

There's just something about the guy that makes him very likeable and trustable. He does not run around talking crap about socialists or commies; he lays out the facts, argues his point legitimately and makes you think. Which is very unusual coming from a politician. He's got my vote in 2012 that's for sure.

As we all know you cannot do anything without having the congress work with you. But that's only if you want to do something, he wants to stop doing things. He wants to stop stupid wars, rediculous military spending, corporate corruption, infringements on freedom, and a very dangerous and out of control federal government.

There has been something I learned from reading an ATS post yesterday, he/she was quoting the constitution and it clearly defined what the federal government could do, but it really did not restrict what the state governments could do. The point being you can have a socialist state in the US and you can also have a Libertarian state in the US. This way everyone has a choice of their lifestyle without leaving the country.

There is no choice of lifestyle, only corporatism with govt. involvement

If elections were held in the near future, and Ron Paul ran as a candidate, either for the Republicans (now co-branded as the "Tea Party Express") or as an independent, I truly believe he would win.

EXCEPT...

I think it's becoming obvious RP is not going to be the Republicans candidate, that party's already decided on it's anointed King / Diva, which will be Huckabee and Palin. Why else do you think they get around the clock PR on Fox News? Quite simply, they will destroy Ron Paul in the primaries.

The corporate structure which props up the Republican sellouts quake in fear at the thought of having a true patriot like RP in the WH. For now, they're content at letting RP attack the "powers that be", currently seen as the Dems (even if it was the GOP that largely caused this economic meltdown we're in now).
