The thing that amazes me about even the old Sharps .50 is that, at close range, it's still *extremely* probable that it can defeat modern-day body armor...Without any kind of specialized armor-piercing loads.

Have to ask, does it truly penetrate body armor, or is the crushing impact force enough to crush the ribcage and destroy internal organs?

It would be more of a "crushing" injury...However, such impact at short range would also penetrate most types of "rigid" bady armor just as easily. Any armor that would be capable of *preventing* injury would be too heavy & bulky as use for *body armor*, that's for sure...
