What I think is interesting is that this is only available on the mobile website, and that if you go to discovery.com they have actually removed this article.

I'm not sure if its just a glitch or if they are trying to cover something up. Either way interesting stuff and maybe someone can dig up more information about what is going on. This may also have some correlation to what astroengineer has been talking about on ATS and on his blog.

I believe due to the date of the story this is an April fools joke.

If not it could be interesting.

Apparently it may not be a April fools.

Mars rover can now control itself
www.mnn.com...

Opportunity was given some kind of AI package last month. Spirit had gotten stuck and this month all communications ceased with Spirit.

I wonder what in the world is going on out there.

I think you are right in the first instance regardless, the operators would need to know well in advance exactly where the probe is and continuity pictures are essential to them, why would they want to introduce a facility for sending pictures ad hoc? I suppose if it is heading for Spirit, It must have heard about "Troy"

It's pretty obvious that we have some April fools here...NASA did upgrade the rover's program, but this article is a joke.

I suppose it could be an April Fool's joke, however, I question the possibility as to whether or not it has lost contact and is operating on it's own or the possibility of outside interference being involved.

I couldn't find anything to substantiate that it was an April Fools joke and the author has several other articles up on Discovery.com. I have to admit I didn't notice the date when I posted it and would have assumed the same thing myself.

I looked on the main Mars Rover website and didn't find anything there saying this and would think it would have been updated by now if it had. So perhaps the joke was on me...

Hopefully astroengineer will post on his thread and I can find out what's really going on with the rovers.

There can logically be only one cause. The Masons. No other explanation makes sense.

The disinfo crowd is strong in this thread.

Did anyone here read astroengineer's entire story?

Did anyone here notice the actual date of the article?

NASA has just received a transmission from the AWOL Rover, it's only a short text and it reads....

Hustone....

Why doun't U make like a twee......and get out of heea...

End of transmission.

Opportunity is chugging along. The story was a joke (and I love what you guys have done with it
)

Spirit is hibernating for the winter.

From my understanding of the related links to articles:

This new software is making things much easier for Opportunity. The software is called Autonomous Exploration for Gathering Increased Science, or AEGIS. It allows Opportunity to photograph a vast array of objects. Formerly, images of objects had to be transmitted to Earth for analysis. Based on these pictures, ground operators would check for targets of interest to examine on a later day. Valuable time would be lost, and ground operators might miss further details if they decided the object wasn’t a high priority.

This says the program allows the rover to decide what to image, instead of waiting on earth to decide then send answers.

Haha, that is too funny. I like how the story got pulled right away to make it seem even more believable, like the story was being suppressed. I thought the rover already had AI that would let it drive on its own? Is this that different? Maybe now it takes photos by itself and before it just drove by itself. Maybe they are just using the same software they put on earth cameras now to detect faces or smiles. now teh rover will take a picture of a smiling martian or martian face if it happens to see one as it drives.

Actually, artificial intelligence is getting pretty advanced these days. There may come a day when machines can think and make decisions and they just might not accept their position in the way things seem to be.
