I have spend some time to understand North Korea, which seems to be one of the strangest country in world - only I think Turkmenistan matches somehow to that isolated country, where people live in so totally different world...

When trying too understand North Korean people and their life, there is lots of interesting material in the net - here is some!

14 Interesting Facts about North Korea

1. You can’t turn off the government radio installed in your home, only reduce the volume.

2. Idolatry in North Korea is such that it is second-nature for ordinary citizens to “rescue” portraits of Kim Il Sung before all else in the case of a house fire (there are even special bunkers for statues in case of war)

3. Many people don’t even know that man has walked on the moon.

4. There is no Internet, cell-phones have been banned.

5. A main cause for all problems are Americans. Mothers teach their children to sing songs about bad Americans, there are many postage stamps showing the death of “U.S imperialists”

6. A six-day work week, and another day of enforced “volunteer” work, ensures that the average citizen has virtually no free time.

7. The very first thing you do when you visit North Korea’s capital Pyongyang is visit and give a flower to a big statue of “Dear Leader”.

8. About 0.85% of the population are held in prison or detention camps.

9. Most traffic control is performed by female traffic directors (reportedly handpicked by Kim Jong-Il for their beauty), as the lights are switched off to save electricity.

10. Dogs are banned in Pyongyang to keep it clean.

11. Avarage wage in 2005 was 6$ (source: www.gluckman.com/NKFEER.html)

12. Visitors of North Korea are given special guides and can’t go anywhere without them.

13. North Koreans are used to often disappearing electricity and have many candles prepared.

14. North Korea has the fourth-largest military in the world, at an estimated 1.21 million armed personnel

- A Must see place, where all foreign visitors are guided to see, is captured US Navy boat in Pyongyang, where you learn how really, really bad USA is... In my posted VBS document thats maybe most best part too.

I look many evenings North Korean satellite broadcast at my Thai-country house, and from there it was amazing to see - In evening news they told about USA, dont know what they said, but after pic of Bush always followed death, explosions - then another pic of Bush - fighter jets, explosion, death... This repeated in every evening news.

No wonder if they hate USA.

the whole country is poisoned due to the constant brainwashing. There is no hope of this country to join the global community anytime soon.

I do wish some people would go visit there, if anything to see exactly what a proper socialism is and then stop saying a tax tweak or different options for health care is socialism...it really dulls down the word and its meaning.

Out of all the issues going on there, the solution would be to "liberate" them, then give every house a computer and full internet access...let them educate themselves...just completely back out and let them discover the world.

There is lots of strange things happening in Turkmenistan...

One of the most great idiotism is their religion - "Ruhnama" - which bases to learning by their past dictator: (Holy book)

en.wikipedia.org...

Look further for your self - and you find very strange land and its peoples. And yes, Turkmenistan can - they do have huge oil reserves!

and thats the problem.

America: Unhindered internet access, electricity, ability to demonstrate against your government unhindered, Choice to work, Choice to be in the military, Travel wherever, whenever you want, public or private education by your own decision, ability to own land, ability to carry guns, a fair(ish) criminal system, Plentiful food, a government system that represents the districts (or not, but thats fully the responsible for the districts to patrol), unfiltered television, etc etc etc...

and you truely dont know the difference between the american way of life and a authoritarian socialist dictatorship with pretty much none of the above..

I call it a spoiled mindset...
If your lacking in anything, its from your own choice verses any reality.

Not sure where the OP got this piece of intel. Its not the mothers who teach their children the songs its the government run schools that teach the songs. The mothers probably just encourage their children to sing it at home and in front of friends/relatives.

Unhindered internet traffic - yes, that might be true
electricity, ability to demonstrate against your government unhindered - wow!
Choice to work - really?
Choice to be in the military - yes, thank god! ;-)
Travel wherever - yes
whenever you want, public or private education by your own decision - yes, thats great
ability to carry guns - ok, I´m not sure if more guns is the best solution though
a fair(ish) criminal system - ok, I sense your disbelief here... with all rights. Its all But fair
Plentiful food - Yeah, luxarys! =D (...most of it poisoned though, but what the heck, its mac donalds! it tastes....mmmm...yummy!!) ;-) ....duh
a government system that represents the districts (or not, but thats fully the responsible for the districts to patrol) - who did you say was in "control" now again?
unfiltered television - you mean like a color filter? or what?? ...as long as it comes to "reality", Fox brings us whatever we "need"....hows that for a filter? ;-)

I am not sure, I think your ultimately agreeing with me point for point, but this last bit about the television programming should be clarified.

Television, with our 40 billion channels of unending flicker brainwashing is unfiltered. I can get BBC, Sky news, I can get a satellite Tv and get Al-J Tv, etc...meaning we can get any and all things we want within legal limits (that being no how to make a bomb networks, no 15 year old schoolgirls doing nude gymnastics networks, etc...but everything else is fine).

Fox News is propaganda (arguably so is MSNBC). CNN is middle of the road sock puppet news. we also get cspan which is very neutral and about as fun to watch as a cardboard box.

We have the freedom to watch unbias and real programming...however we choose to watch sensationalism, sex, violence, and all the other fun stuff. If this was a dictatorship, talk radio, and partisan news channels would simply be cancelled. The fact that MSNBC, Fox, etc...continue to operate is a shining example of our freedom, but also a highlight of our general national retardation.

-add- And welcome to ATS. proud to be the focus of your very first post here

The best thing that can be done for NK is to leave it completely alone - interfering is likely to bring more suffering.

If and when the people decide that the leadership is no longer tolerable, then they will act to change it.

The US has its own brainwashing media and corrupt controlling government that is intent on enslaving its people - remove the mote from your own eye, before trying to help others.
